Surviving Minnesota!

Morning all:

Late morning for me. Bad night, Getting old is not fun!

I know, I know, I could always have the surgery, you all sound like Judy!

I have birds to move again today. I got Judy to help me measure the game bird netting and we decided where the next 4 pens can go. ( well, she told me where they were allowed and where they were not allowed)

Sleepyowl, Are your Creams "calm" or are they flighty?

Well, nothing new, see ya.

Well I have two Guineas left from my original flock, and they are both males. They have been in the coop with the chickens all winter, and now that the flock has been out free ranging it only took a couple days for the Guineas to decide they are going to roost in the Pine trees at night. I hope an Owl doesn't find them, as they are just about to start tick eradication duty.

The chickens and guineas are loving the new grass coming up in the lawn and field. I am resisting the temptation to hatch or buy any chicks until May, as I don't want to deal with them in the house to start.

Ralphie, are you out building more coops and runs in preparation for your flock expansion?

I need a pen to lock the guineas into, that pen will be 45x47 ft. I need to get there eggs, As far as I know they have not started laying yet.

I am making the other three runs 8x45' these will be breeding pens and rearing pens, I plan to move Ed and the PC's into one of these. I am not getting the results I want with him, while I have some PC chicks I do not have a lot. I think a bigger pen will help. One of the pens will be for Creamette chicks. I want to show a few of them and want them in a pen I can easily move in and watch them to see which ones look the best to my untrained eye.

Because of my eagle and hawk problems I have huge losses on chicks if I let them free range too early, so I plan to keep them under cover for a longer time.

I am also preparing for next year breeding season. I will need pens for PC,SS,Doms,Buckeyes, turkeys and guineas. And if by chance I get some rose combed leghorns, some of them.

So Yes and no to the question.

Oh and next year I want enough guineas to let half roam for tick duty while half do reproduction duty.

I'm not really sure. They are still in a grow out pen (I am working on something bigger), so in a 4x8 area, so they don't really have enough room to freak out. They act slightly more skittish and are harder to catch than my Orpingtons that I have with them. None of them were really handled though, so about what I would expect. I would say more flighty than the Orps, but Orps are known for their calmness.

Let's all hope you achieve a   33.333333333333% hatch rate.  for the good of the world,,.:lau

Actually my first duck hatch ever had 100% hatch rate! And my 20 duck hatch had 4 bad eggs

And all the duck eggs in the incubator have development except for one

If you continue that, I will have to bring you before the UN Human rights commission and maybe even have you tried at the Hague for crimes against humanity..
