Surviving Minnesota!

Had a pack of coyotes around last night . Very noisy for a bit . I now have a free range redtick coonhound doing guard duty . He showed up 2 weeks ago . I found his owner and he went home . Owner brought him back Friday . Said he wanted to fight his other dog . So he lives here now . He sticks around and will not bother poultry . Not sure what he did about the coyotes but guessing that was what the fuss was all about .

on another topic I have black raspberry cutting rooting actually yellow sports . Gathered them while hunting and put the in a pot with potting soil in the garage . They are leafing out and I pulled one and it has roots . So I learned something new . I will try some reds and blackberries next .Not sure if those will worh as root pieces are what they usually do .

There has been yotes here the last few nights just yipping away. Hope your new pooch keeps them away.

Good Monday Morning all. I hope you all had a blessed Easter. We were all together at home and it was very very Nice. I went out and took some pictures of my birds. They are looking great this spring.

Here is the upside down buckeye. Her wings/tendons/ligaments are back to normal. She is doing well and hopefully she'll resume an egg schedule that was brought to an abrupt stop.

Here is Dixie. My Buff Silkie who is blending into the dead grasses and foliage of early spring with great ease. She is literally the same color as the yellowed grasses. She has been free ranging a ton this spring and that is fun to see as she is usually nest locked with a broody brain. She serves her purpose in my flock though. And at first I regretted getting her but now I don't have regrets with her. Her crest is not show quality. But I don't want a big puff ball blurring her vision. She needs all of her vision around my yard. She's a good fit. Very feisty little girl. Yet easily handled by the food lady.

Here is Roger the Big Tootsie and the BLRW, Lucy (my A+ layer right now) and the EE with questionable morals, Marigold. Roger gave her a good chase again this morning.

I don't know what it is about her. But she is Eggless so not sure of the attraction there.

And the main man himself. Full of crackers and dried cherries no doubt. Spoiled. Spoiled Spoiled.

**Please disregard the ransacked hammock that used to be nice until we added a yellow family member.

Your BLRW is beautiful! I don't care what DH says.....if I find any BLRW chicks or pullets, they're coming home with me.

Roger is so lucky!!

He has such a great life. My rooster would love to change places with him.

I just meet Sleepyowl.. I am happy to report another BYC member is not a weirdo person we need fear! She is as normal as me!

Yes, normal.

On a side note Ralphie, I picked up some Khaki Campbells Saturday. I was going to get some ducklings for you, too, but figured you'd want to pick your own out. You can get them at Anoka Farm & Garden.

Thank you MinnesotaNice. That BLRW came from a kindergarten classroom hatch which were hatching eggs from Minnie's Barnyard Mix. I feel like I was pretty lucky asking for the 'chipmunk chick' that day. She is a gorgeous hen and I'm very proud of her.

Jerry sorry to hear about the 'Yotes. Just think in a few months you'll get to hear the Wolves howl.

That's nice to have a new dog that is protective of the flock and keeping the coyotes rustled up. Perhaps it was meant to be that you got him.

I see no leaves and very little green grass trying to emerge in this winter-dead foliage time of year. The Lakes still with Ice. It is still cool nights here (high twenties) I think we'll get some rain today or tomorrow...that should help with some greening...but the temps will go to the 40's for highs after that. It's a slow spring. Just as well I guess. Rather have that then snow. Jerry your Black Raspberry showing buds makes me want to come along though. It's getting to be time.

Somebody broke into my in-law's garage Sunday night. Small tools taken from FIL's truck. (keys were left in center glove box) They put old gas in their vehicle. It will be interesting if they show up to the local fix-it shop with varnish in their carborators. And a set of Old Golf Clubs worth nothing.
They also broke into 6 seasonal trailers at the neighboring resort. I despise thieves. Dirty. Dirty. Dirty.

I have a pair of muscovy and a white pekin hen . They were meant to go to freezer camp but thinking of letting them out . Hoping the dog will protect them . So love having them raise naturally . It has been years since I could . Predators are rough on ground nesters .

Maybe I should raise turkey .

Cool trail pictures! I've only been getting squirrels on mine although I can tell the deer have been roaming through my backwoods. I'm not familiar with Pekins....can they fly?

You got lucky @Bogtown Chick ! And what a fun things for kids to do. There should be more of that in the classroom and I feel like you just don't see it as much anymore. Growing up, there were was always something aquatic or a small animal of some sort hanging out in the classrooms. I remember taking turns bring home a class hamster for a week. I'm glad we have the mini farm that we do

I want my son to have that experience and bond with animals.

They do not fly very well . When crossed to Muscovy they fly really well . Sterile hybrids but great meat birds . My Muscovy drake is white . White is best as the pin feathers do not show so much . None of these hens have laid yet . Soon I hope . You can sometimes get a Muscovy to use a nest box on a pole . Harder for predators . Mine usually went under a shed in the past . Coons always get those . Coyotes grab the free range adults . With the new dog I just may try again .

I am a sucker for hound dogs. We have a Black and Tan
If we got a 3rd dog it would be a red bone
