Surviving Minnesota!

Erli you and I will have to start popping vit D supplement pills again. This ridiculous. White tufts on my lawn again. Every day this week. It melts during the day. Small blessings! But I need some sunshine and warm up. Lots of lakes are out here. Some of the bigger ones hanging on though. For the most part we are 2 weeks ahead traditional ice outs. Usually you start seeing liquid about the third week of April up here.

Those warm spring showers do make morels pop up.

It's Friday. Woot. DH is heading to the rainy river to rip some lips. And I have two kids and not one thing scheduled. Will take them up to visit the folks Saturday and bask in my moms cooking and laugh with my funny dad. Can't wait.

I haven't stopped the D, it just makes me feel better, will stop maybe in June

if the sun comes out. Usually April 15th give or take a week for ice out here so yes it was very early this year but now it feels like it'll freeze over again!! it sure is nice to hear the loons again

now if it would warm up I could open a bedroom window to hear them.

A good friend of mine has a secret spot for morels, about three years ago she took me along. I found about 5 to het 75! but after you find one you can't stop looking.

Hi my sister is a new member to BYC and I got ahold of here account ( with her permission of course ). LOL and was reading you collect morels and always wanted to collect morels. But every time I go out looking for them I seem to have missed the season. I live in battle lake MN near Fargo ND and was wandering if you had any tips.

Also we are heading to the spring tri county exotic animal and bird auction in Fergus falls MN and was wandering if any fellow minnesotian's was heading that way for the auction.

When is the Fergus Falls auction?

Ralphie must be sleeping in today.

I have a question that is gardening related and kinda genetics related I'm hoping somebody can answer.

I grew mammoth sunflowers last year to feed to my chickens over winter. I have saved a good pile of seeds to replant this year. I saved the biggest seeds from the biggest heads in hopes this would propagate the genes of the biggest plants. Is there any truth to my logic? Or will any seeds from the heads do?

Ralphie, I used a better flashlight, and all 10 of the eggs that I set from you are developing. Today is day 7.

I am guessing they are all developing is because of Sven and Chauncy's family history. They are EJB's grandchildren. Ole was EJB's prized rooster. EJB personally taught Ole how to rooster.

EJB taught Ole to teach his sons to do their job well. That includes making babies. You should search Youtube and see the video on EJB teaching Ole how to do the rooster dance for the girls. It has nearly a million hits!

I assume you did not know Ole moved here as a youth. I can take no credit, EJB did it all......

Ralphie, there you have it! As Jerry wrote Morels need warm days and warm nights are a plus. Those conditions do not exist at my place or near Togo except in a rare case.
You know the old adage " it is colder by the lake". On a positive note Lake Superior does provide free air conditioning in summer. Summer is usually some day in July.

Guess what, no not "chicken butt". It snowed again last night, but the forecast high for today is a balmy 28 degrees. The Banana Belt sounds more inviting all the time.

This is not the day to be in the Banana belt!

There is a snowstorm going on today! We have enough snow to shut Memphis down for a week. I am not happy.

BTW I am using Memphis's idea of a snowstorm, not EJB's. as he gets lake effect snow which can be a real female dog in heat. When we moved away from his area we remembered summer is more than 2 days long.

Could you send me some vitamin D pills?

Up indicates north, Are you heading to Togo?

When will your DH be back with the freshly caught Bullheads? Are you inviting me for a bullhead fry?

I just learned more than I have previously from anybody. I will add that I have heard to give the mushroom a gentle shake so that the spores fall out where they are growing and will regrow the next year. Thank you Jerryse.

Use a basket to collect your shrooms so the spores fall out as you're picking.

*I did over sleep, I worked so hard getting ready for the "inspection" my back refused to stop spasming. I took the last batch of chicks to the shed at 11pm. I then had to come in and move chicks from the hatchers into the cages. I have more tanks of chicks to get ready today. I moved my boat out of the "chick shed" to make more room for babies.

The floors are swept clean in both of them. I cleaned up some of the spillage around the feed storage area. So much to do, I really hope she is in a good mood when she shows up. If I can squeeze past the inspection and get my NPIP stuff, I plan to take some chicks and poults to Floodwood. I am thinking of bringing some hatching eggs too. I have no idea if any would sell, but it would be a fun day. I hope my little inverter will run a heat lamp or heating pad. I may have to get a larger one.

Kloppers, I think in a perfect world or a lab, you are right. The problem is even if your sunflowers have huge seeds and heads it may not be the case for f2. There is no guarantee which plants did the pollination of your seeds. The bee that carried the pollen may have just come for a little dwarf mini headed sunflower at your neighbors place.

But you are out nothing trying, I am sure some will be huge and have been self pollinated or from another of you big headed ones. It is a crap shoot, some will be good some not. I use to do the same thing with Hubbard Squash, sometimes it worked sometimes it did not.

* I forgot to mention I took a full dose of Flexeral and Tramadol a little after midnight so I am groggy today.
