Surviving Minnesota!

Saponification is the chemical conversion of oils with lye. Soap is "raw" and unusable for two days. Then cut bars cure for 6 weeks hardening and dehydrating to give it longevity in the shower or tub. It has glycerin ( unlike commercial soaps-- glycerin is removed and sold) which keeps the skin in great condition.

I knew you would know! Thank you.

I'm sort of a nerd that way ivie.

. Lol. Compared to some soap makers I know not very much. There are formulas to make your soap less bubbly to hang onto scents better. Or more bubbly to get mechanic hands cleaner. Clays and colorants can morph. Some fragrances will rice or speed up the chemical reaction or seize it altogether. Beer and milks have sugar that make the soap trace rise in temps. It can be a crazy mad scientist experiment.

I had one batch rice on me and all that nummy oil that was wasted.... It can be frustrating learning these things.

I know. It has been a number of years and I often think that I must make a batch of soap. My DH put in a small kitchenette in my basement so that I do not have to worry about splashing on the floor. I still have not made another batch. I guess it is time and I know that I will. Use it or loose it. It is more fun than genetics of chickens or plants to me. Boring stuff to others. But others sure enjoy receiving the gift of the product.

Tada! the corn grinder works! i was a little worried going in that i would have to feed the corn slowly and it would take lots of time to grind the corn but no issues! i dumped a little in at first and it come out quickly so i dumped a whole quart in at once and it spit it right out! and the grind is perfect for mixing feed i think!

I put a call in to the co-op and told them i was ready to order in the mixes i need and will get the soy while i am there. im excited to make my own feed! i need to figure out how I am going to weigh and mix still but those will be easy. this is going to cut my feed bill in half! from 13 bucks a bag from the store to 6.50 a bag homemade!

Wow I'm so glad I found this site.....soap making, Roloulage,chickens...we've got it all. On a side note I met Ralphie today, nice guy that reminds me of my uncle. Wish we could've talked longer...on a positive note all my chicks are happy and healthy I just introduced them to pine shavings they were on puppy pads prior. Wow what a hoot watching the shavings fly everywhere.
