really?
Sometimes there are enough posts to satisfy me.
I had never thought of Holm developing his own breed. I think that is an excellent idea. Maybe he should take over my Minnesota Australorp project call them Whiskey Creek Australorps. It has become apparent I am not going to have enough time to get them to perfection. If you ever get the chance to meet Holm, you would be impressed with his knowledge and the way he cares for his birds. He is an amazing young man with a bright future ahead of him. ( Holm poke a pin into your head now, let the swelling out after you see me say that about you)
I have to second that, Ralphie! And I know you are completely joking about the swollen head. He is such a humble person, I think. Are we making your blush yet @holm25 ? It is so wonderful to see young people who are trying to make things better in the world even if it is the part of it where they are doing a little bit at a time, in a little rural town in Minnesota.
There are plenty of really good breeds around already, like you said, Ralphie, check out the Livestock Conservancy and you can see plenty of good ones who need promoting and good breeding. That was where I first learned about Buckeyes. However, if one were to develop a new breed, we can always use more pea or rosecomb breeds that will hold up in the cold climates (while the cold climate lasts) without suffering so much frostbite. There are some breeds I just love the looks of, but those big single combs take a big hit here. It is a drawback of the New Hampshires and Welsummers both, and every year, they get a little or a lot nipped off. I have thought about combining the Bucks and NHs to make a pea comb breed that looks like a New Hampshire, but that takes a few years and I don't know if I am up for that at this stage in life. Holm could just go with Whiskey Creek Poultry, then he can breed whatever featherheads strike his fancy

I notice things because I am interested in genetics . I trained myself to look for differences and figure out how or why . I even notice accidental hybrid sunfish . Most around here think all sunfish are bluegill . Private stocking of ponds is common and hybrid bluegill are often used . They are actually redear x green sunfish with no bluegill in the mix . I sometimes catch bluegill x green hybrids . Greens often spawn at the edge of bluegill beds . Some drift of semen occurs . They do not actually pick mates of the other species . I find these up north too .Okay Jerry: I took a walk to the back of our Lot and where there is massive canes back there of Blackberries (i'm talking nearly 6 foot tall Canes) ...I think these are not hybrids. They are loaded with berries but all green yet with a hint of blush at the base of the berries. We've got a ways to go yet. I think you are on to something with the crossing and the seeing of some ripe now. As that one ripish one I found was on a shorter cane but still in a shaded area. Weird. You're one smart cookie, my friend.
I have another recipe for your cukes I will message you.
Way to go Holm's I hope some of your inspiration rubs off on other fellow chickeners.Ejb, Ralphie and Minnie I think starting my oen breed would be fun! I used to want to do that and then I noticed all these breeds that need work and thought "why would I start a new breed when there is so many that need help?" I REALLY REALLY REALLY like my Buckeyes and they are definetly a breed I want to work with! Ralphie your Minnesota Australorps would be something I would love to help you with when I finish getting set up here!
FYI there is a breed waiting to be made . The black skinned breeds like Svart Hona = Swedish black hen could be crossed to White Faced Black Spanish to create a blue faced breed . White over black = blue or turquoise . Much like the ear lobes on Silkies .Ejb, Ralphie and Minnie I think starting my oen breed would be fun!
