Surviving Minnesota!

@Momof3plustwins I hope all goes well with the Gallbladder. If its not necrotic already and such it should be a cinch getting it done laprascopically. Do not delay though. 111 cornishes. I'm guessing you are with Ralphie in the Feed Bill/month category.

@jerryse he is a quiet wanderer and if he didn't look so unusual I wonder about anybody noticing him at all. But his looks, his friendliness, his patterns have made him stand out...to some I guess. LOL. Grandma probably busy making sure all is well with her Grandkids before noticing a dog in a chaotic turtle town.

Good Luck on the gall bladder.....

Never saw the dog, or noticed him when I went through town, I think I have been through there 3-4 times in the last 20 years...

If when the time comes and you are beginning the afterlife and if you are given a chance to come back as anything you want, I suggest you not ask to be a chick at my place. I lost 4 of the remaining 7 tree chicks last night. I have no idea how anything got in there, and why there is not one feather left on the ground inside the cage. I am baffled.

It seems no matter how tight I lock them up something gets them. I never dreamt in a 100 years those chicks would not be safe inside their little fort Knox. If I did not know better I would think someone snuck up here in the middle of the night and took them.

But that makes no sense. Why risk that for 4 chicks? Baffled I am. Just remember if the creator asks you if you want to be a chick at my place you will be standing back before him in about 3 weeks again.

Sorry Ralphie.
it's the hole in the tree chicks? wonder how high the tree is hollow. Don't know why I wonder that because chicks couldn't climb like a wood duck could they?

They have been locked inside the cage/pen attached to the tree. I do not think it goes very high up. It looks like it is just the bottom that is hollow. Still a mystery, I am going to have to set up game camera's, BUT those chicks will be spending their first night inside a building.

She does fed the little ones game bird starter and she also gives them boiled eggs in the beginning. She said she has tried chick starter on them but they just don't seem to do as good as with the game bird starter, they do need the extra protein. Maybe with the mealworms they would be OK. I wonder if you would wet down some cat food for them if that would give them more protein or if that would even be good for them, I don't know? My chickens love the cat food and it doesn't seem to bother them any. Just a suggestion, don't know if you want to try it or not.

She usually raises between 50 and 100 a year but I don't think she hatched as many this year. She is in the process of moving and is trying to slow down for a year or two but, personally, I don't think it's working.

She also owns a nursery business so moving is a slow but busy process.

Enjoy your babies!!

Wow, she has quite the Peafowl business! They're definitely a bit more touchy than chicks or ducklings. I try not to handle them too often, but make my presence known. They know where their food comes from. I've heard of people mixing cat food in with their regular adult feed to maintain good protein levels. I don't think cat food is unheard of for chickens, either, especially for molting. I think the sodium content was the only concern, but who knows. I even considered mixing it in last winter. Oh, and thanks for the info!

Martie's in St Francis has game bird starter, I also get finisher and breeder mixes from Marties.

The problem with a lower protein chick starter is the internal development. The organs will not mature properly without the extra protein. You will not notice it as a chick/poult/baby. You will when they start to lay eggs and breed.

I did find some at L&M. They only had one bag, which surprised me. I'll check out Martie's when this bag is gone - muuuuch closer than GR.

Do you feed all your little ones higher protein?
