Surviving Minnesota!

A coyote tried to get a chicken today, I was sitting outside while they free ranged this afternoon and the 2 juvies were looking at something nervously and as I got up a coyote started running into the yard and I yelled HEY and my dog went after it and I started running and yelled to DH who was in the house. So the dog and DH chased it off as I got the flock penned up.

Way to go!!!

Can I hire you to guard my flock too? I can pay with all the water you can drink.

Today began bright and early at 6:30am to plug in the scalder. Then all the set up to begin butchering began an hour later. by 2:30 we had butchered, cooled, bagged, and weighed 65 birds. We have 44 left to do and are planning to do them next Friday or even a week later. Both the Pastor (who raises his butcher chickens at our house) and we like the bigger birds as we both have many children and need a larger bird to feed everyone. Last time we waited until 9.5 wks and they ranged from 5lbs to 8.5lbs this time they were mostly 4 to 4.5 lbs. We have the Star Plucker and it works so well! 15 secs and it is done being plucked.

Now I have to finish with some last minute clean up and then make it to the lake. I really think I am just going to wait until morning though.

Have a good weekend.

Good job!

Might I ask what a "star plucker' is?

Well I counted how many eggs the broody Buckeye had today. She had 15 eggs under her! And she easily covered them all! Sadly only twelve are good. But holy cats! That's gonna be a lot of babies for a first timer if most of them hatch! I usually get close to 100% with Brodie's but being this is her first time idk how she'll do. And may I say she is very aggressive at night? At least she doesn't bite to hard!

And some pics of my little thugs.

He is definitely a keeper! He's never but me once except for when he misses a treat lol! He might not be breeder but he can go with my mixed later flock! He's just to nice to get rid of!

Oh Ralphie!! Too bad about Ethel! I just hated the feeling I had when we realized our turkey hen wasn't coming home. Nothing could have been done but it doesn't change the way we feel about it.

I hope Judy realizes how serious not getting sick is and just takes a leave from work for a bit. And then baby step back into things. Hoping she starts to feel better soon and you can bring her home.

Rhett's how is Norman the little bull doing??? I he doing his "job"?

I had to band our little premature calf today... He isn't hardly growing... He's no bigger than 125 pounds and was born in May! But just be in he's small doesn't mean he didn't fight me! I wish I got it on video! I got to play cowboy and flip him on his side and hold them there while banding him. It was a chore but I managed to get that terrible job done.

Ralphie, Judy is in my prayers for a speedy recovery for sure. Very sorry to hear about Ethel. I'll miss all the talk of her.
