Surviving Minnesota!

Jerry, I don't know if you have seen Mike Gilbert's post on the Ameraucana Forum today? If not you may wish to read it. Nice to have old friends inquire about you, and the post makes one stop and think that each day we can get up and do the things we want is a gift from heaven.

I need some help... I am having trouble with my big rooster cutting up the hens really badly... This is the worst yet and I have no clue what to do about it... I'm starting to think this roo is just to big to breed these little hens of mine

What can I do about that big cut other than keep it clean? I am gonna figure some stuff out this week to try and prevent this. I have never had issues with this in chickens before but have with turkeys.

Thanks for any advice.
Clean it as well as you can, use Neosporin, stitch with needle and thread and keep an eye on it for infection. Go back once the tear is healing shut and snip out the thread.
I have had some bad cuts from roosters on hens and have just sprayed them with BluKote. Yours is too big to just leave. I have had to stitch up juvies who have piled and cut each other up and they do alright with what I have said. The Neosporin will help lube for stitching too and make the needle slide through easier.
I would start checing toenails and spurs and start snipping them back or you can twist off the spurs.

Thanks for all the info everybody! I can't trim his Spurs because there is nothing to trim! They r not even half an inch long and they r still pencil erasers. He is just WAY to rough with the hens. I love Lucky but he is being naughty lately. He attacks EVERYTHING! Except for humans... He learned not to mess with them awhile back. But he's a bit of a killer. He grabs young birds and runs around with them like they r food. I just need to make some decisions... I can't run a naughty rooster farm but I also said I would take good care of him and give him a chance at life...

I have been fortifying a chicken pen today . I had a coon break in and kill a bunch . Ralphie they got the pea comb Legbar .:(

I'm sorry to hear this Jerry! Good luck catching the little masked bandit! I found a spotlight and .12 gauge are the best "traps"...

Bummer. He was a one of a kind. I bet you could figure out how to make another though. August/Sept is a tough month for all of us with predators.

Holm. Do not worry about my feelings if you have to roast/bake/fry Lucky. It just means he was not as lucky as I thought he was. You cannot have a rooster that beats up the hens. Do what you must.

Thanks Ralphie. I just feel bad cuz he is beautiful! He really developed into a beautiful rooster!

I have lots of other "beautiful" roosters if you need another one.  A mean one is never worth keeping around.

Right now I have PLENTY roosters 2 Bucketes, 2 mutts, 1 Lucky, 1 adult mutt and whatever is in these batches of chicks! Which it looks like there is two roosters and two pulleys in the batch of four. One of the EE's is sired by my Buckeye rooster and is looking an awful lot like a pullet. Got a long tail and lots of feathers in already while two that are cockerels have little to no feathers.
