I'm afraid that's his future... Along with his son and the other cockerel. Any roosters in this batch of chicks will just stay around till next spring and if I like them enough I will use them for breeding for a few months.

The only birds that will get their own breeding pens will be the Buckeyes I think. I may find another breed this fall yet. I should probably think of a breed... I should see what Urch has... Hmm...

They r beautiful! Do u hatch any pure americaunas? Is that how u spell it even lol?

Jamie Matt's is having an auction for a blue, black, or splash frizzle cockerel, and a smooth pullet of blue, black, or splash.
I could get them shipped at the same time as the other 2 I am getting but I'm wondering what you guys think I should do.. As long as the price of them doesn't go over $100, I'm ok with the price plus shipping. But I'm wondering if it'd be better to wait until next year and see what I am able to hatch out of Gary, my blue frizzle, or get some chicks from Jamie..
Edited cause I can't spell

Do u have pics of the possible birds? Do u have recent pics of Gary and his girl friend?

My Second summer Roger tore open this NH hen.

3 inch plus gashes on both sides. We saw her dragging behind the rest of the hens one day. Probably had had the issue for a while. But it was under the wing feathers...out of sight. She was always with him. A favorite. Accessible. This was after I had cleaned her up. Because she loved dusting everyday...too...packing the skin pockets full of dirt along with the blood and drainage. No other hens suffered this...just her. And I don't know why. Same breed and all. Was it her body shape...or just the accessibility? It probably was a combination of the two. But it took me a good hour or two to clean her up. I used iodine water and gauze. Then I sprayed with that Veterycin spray. And I gooped Bacitracin. I thought I was going to lose her that first night. But I seperated her...she looked relieved almost. Fell asleep in the kennel in the garage with electrolyte water to help restore her. I also tried stitching her...but the skin wasn't having it. It was already dried and retracted.

Here's the Before:

She was alive the next morning and ready to get out. I wrapped a stretchy long gauze around her. Kerlix it's called. Just to give a measure of help to keep it clean from dusting and maybe keep the spurs from ripping more down. I also built her a hen saddle with extra long sides. It was totally ugly. I built a belly strap around it too. So the extra long flaps wouldn't flip up. she free ranged in that thing and never got stuck or caught. sort of amazed me.

Next Roger got major spur trimming and rounding off of the spurs.

And here she is a mere 2 weeks later with good cleanings, veterycin and neosporin

Good luck @holm Roosters do settle down though too. He might be a candidate to be seperated...or put a saddle on that particular hen too. It could be she's a favorite.

Thanks for the pics and info BC!! I do t have room to house a rooster right now which is the problem. He is a good boy. Just not with other birds.
