Surviving Minnesota!

Thanks for the kind words about my EE.

I have not had a lot of soft shelled eggs this year, but I do not worry about it with pullets. I figure it takes them a few months to get their systems up and running.

I checked 3 of Ed's sons last night for looks and disposition. Only one was even halfway "friendly" and he has small black streaks on his toes. I have to review the SOP's again. I think they are ahead of Ed though. They didn't bite me.

They can have the black!! Dusky yellow is allowed!!

Last night another huge deluge of water. A neighbor has reported in his rain gauge a total of 4 1/2 inches since Monday. That's a lot of water. I am also not under the delusion that my dunks are still working. I sat down at the coop Monday after our return camping. And my ankles were starting to burn. Those mosquitos biting felt like fire ants. Needless to say the honeymoon phase of the dunks is over. I think I will not buy more for this year. Jack Frost will help me out here soon enough.

So back to this Water. I've been thinking if we have a winter like we've had this summer for precipitation, DH will have that V-plow on his truck quite a bit. Alot of moisture dropping here. It may be a snowy winter.

DH turns 50 today. I got my biggest kid a boquet of balloons and sent them to his work place. Dinner at the In-laws.

Cluckies! I can't believe that Green Machine has broke? What?!

I'm disappointed that reliable companies are selling themselves on the cheap these days. Giving up their quality and selling out on the cheap. I hear that Honda is still pretty proud of their generators with a high price tag but they are starting to make them sub-par so as to make it that they don't last forever and you need to buy one every so often. DH was telling me of friends with a 'newer generation' generator that did not last. Our John Deere Tractor is a 1999. It turns over every spring for me after being kept in a cold shed. This year I put $300 into it. With Oil change, new blades, new rubber mower deck/blade gaurd, new front bumper. We have alot of old stuff...but I'm starting to think the older stuff is better than the new.

My 2 cents worth on mowers . I use them hard . My brother has a Cub Cadet at the lake . Like a 44 or 48 inch deck . I am impressed with it . I have mowed 3 - 4 foot overgrown stuff with it . Raise it up and go slow . Walks right through it . I like my Brute self propelled also . It has enough power . You can not abuse push mowers like I did when I was young . Cranks are softer and will bend .Many name brands have been bought by MTD . They own everything from Murray ( junk ) to Troy built . I do not hire mowing at the lake . I just mow when I get there .My brother hires mowing . Mom hired mowing at the last at the lake . I remember hitting the top of a rock and putting a gash in the deck of a push mower at the lake . Rock chipped off a sliver . No bent crank . Can not do that now .

Sorry about your losses Jerry.

My daughter made it back safely from the BWCA, so that is good. She had a good time, no fish though, but that is ok she says. I guess my brother and his wife were also up there, lol, I could have had him check on her! small world.

Ralphie, how is Judy doing?
I think that was all summer not just when you took time off.....unless you had the whole summer off.

I posted this in the oegb thread and have not yet received a reply, maybe someone here has the answer?:

I bought a pair of porcelain oegs this summer. I tried hatching her eggs and none were fertile. I assumed the rooster was too young or something so I put her in my mixed pen, which is mostly mille fluers. She always laid in the same nest so I thought I knew which eggs were hers and thought I'd throw a few of them under a broody I had. Three of the eggs hatched but two of them look like self blues (no speckles) and the third chick is a darker grey/blue color. Just wondering if porcelains get speckles later or will they stay the solid blue color? Any idea what these chicks would throw crossed with a mille rooster next year? Thanks in advance for any info.

If I remember correctly, the chick color for Porcelain is a creamy with silver highlights in the fluff. How old are the chicks now?
You probably already know, you can't judge even a juvie who is 3 months by their color because they still have a couple of molts then before getting their mature plumage.

While I have no experience with porcelian color I do know it is Millie with self blue gene added . Self blue being recessive . So a cross to Millie will give you Millie with 1 copy of the recessive .

My computer needed a doctor so its been gone for two days. This is the best picture of spider that I have taken thus far. Those are orange legs and that yellow / black part is the body. Sometimes it looks lime green. I have looked and not found anything yet. But then I haven't had the computer for two days. I think those other spider pictures scared the hard drive and it was hiding.

It is easier for me to identify spiders by the :smear: they leave when squished. Please Squish him so I can ID him better....

The top one is mine and the bottom is the one my sister used to show.

Holm She liked your sisters. Sorry Man! You are just destined to be second place behind her for life now....

I moved birds today. I have 5 in individual cages to learn how to be friendly and like people. I am going to town to get some raspberry red finger nail polish for my nails and raspberries to see if I can get them to jump into my hands.

It was too dark and my phone was too dead to get pictures, I will try to get some tomorrow. The PC I picked was not one I expected to. It is my youngest PC rooster. but his coloring is the nicest by far. I am hoping he gets enough weight in 6 weeks.

I need to pick hens now. but it took me hours of agonizing over the roosters, I cannot imagine how hard the hens will be.

I need to go to Runnings now for finger nail polish, catch you all later!
