Surviving Minnesota!

Morning . Well yesterday I came back with about 3 quarts of persimmon fruit . They are not common here but are in southern IL . Deer love the fruit . I have some seedling trees and will plant more seed from these . I may try persimmon bread or cookies with the fruit .
Never heard of this type of fruit.....what does it taste like?

It is a wild native . Zone 5 and zone 4 on some named ones like Yates and Meader . Stark Brothers nursery carries then . Very astringent until ripe . They get wrinkled when ready . Some say apricot like flavor IDK taste of its own IMO . Meader is a seedless type when grown alone . This good for humans . Lots of large seeds in the others . I may give some a try in zone 3 at the lake . May get lucky .

Yes it was alive in the live trap. (I was trying to decrease the raccoon population, as hubby saw 5 in the past 2 weeks.)

This ambiguous statement does not mention if he/she was alive when she left the trap?

I only ask because I know how technical the release process can be and how often it ends up being fatal to the poor creature inside the "live" trap.

Here are some persimmon fruit . Lots of large seeds . Fruit is only about a inch or so in size . I squeeze the skin off . It is thin and tears easily but I remove to get rid of any pucker power that may still be present . Banana belt can probably grow them . There ya go Ralphie a new forager fruit for you . About like any wild fruit . Not a lot there . Then people use choke cherry and pin cherry .

I think I am too far north in the Banana Belt to have any of these around here. I have heard of them and I think I have had persimmon jelly or jam. I think my son had one in his yard when he lived in Waterloo.

Even choke cherries and pin cherries are not as prevalent here as they were when I was a kid. I am thinking global cooling has taken them out. If we do not stop this march towards the upcoming ice age life will be wiped out here. I am doing my part by spraying Freon into the atmosphere as fast as I can but I need help. I cannot afford a lot of aerosol cans. Join the cause! Or send donations to me....

Did it spray when it got trapped?
I assume it did....as it stunk terribly in the backyard this morning.

I honestly can not comment on it....as my wonderful father-in-law was pulling into our yard, as I was leaving for work this morning. I will be able to tell by the number of bald eagles swarming my house. With the last skunk, I counted 3 adult bald eagles and 4 juvenile bald eagles pecking at the carcass at one time. So obviously skunk is their delicacy of choice.
