Surviving Minnesota!

Another cutie.

What the heck are you doing hatching this time of year!? I am glad there is somebody to share fluff butt pictures this time of year! Congrats on the chicks!

Jerry, I would not think too badly of those folks that came to see what was happening when you were using your chain saw. They were quite likely Swedish. Curious but lacking in other attributes?
They were certainly not Norwegian, as those folks wrote the book on logging, and they tend to their own business. Would you not agree Ralphie?

I most certainly think you have your Scandinavian mixed up.....

I can't help it. So many women at work are pregnant and this is my maternal response. ;-)

BC Roger Jr looks like my PC's.

Mo3. Did you say earlier your barred males are darker than your females?

I just checked mine because I thought mine were the other way around, and they are. Both the Doms and the Cuckoo Marans.

My problem with Cackle was not the quality of the birds it was the "straight" run they sent me that ticks me off. 26 males out of 32 just does not do it for me.

That IS odd, since the Barred birds should be the other way around. Hmmm. If they are hatchery origins though, you never know.

Thanks for the Ovation Minnie. But all kudos go to you. He's amazing. You mentioned white on the wings...I'm not seeing any on him. But that comb...my only trepidation about him and this winter. LOL. We'll ride it out...nothing else to do about it.

A good boy, too. He let me pick him up tonight. Although...I don't want to do it too much. He hasn't taken a run at anybody at all. **Knock on wood**. He's unsure of himself yet-skiddish. But I do believe he's established dominance over all the hens except the two old girls. (4 year old originals) Not too bad.

No I have a dark pullet and a lighter pullet. just wondering for color which is preferred. All my males are lighter than their counterparts. I am speaking of my Dominique pullets.

Yes I knew that about your run but said earlier you were not impressed with the Cuckoo Maran. I was just wondering why?

Ivie what are you using for bedding, years ago I was told straw gives mites a place to hide.

Pine shavings in the nesting boxes and with the chicks. Otherwise they roost so no bedding there. Dirt floor in the coop/run. Dusted them tonight with Sevin (using the nylon method - Minnie, you are a genius and BT thanks for telling me) and came in to shower and wash those clothes. Worked pretty well. Started to feel them crawling on me while in the coop but when I started dusting - whoop - they were gone. Seriously, the birds seem happier. Can't wait to begin the deep cleaning process tomorrow. It will be in stages but that is okay too.

Ivie: lice and mites happen to the best of set-ups and pampering and such. Old hay bales... Yes I've heard that. Wild turkeys and birds visiting. I've quit feeding wild birds in part due to this issue. But I've also seen my territorial high hens and roosters give good chases to jays, flickers, robins... You name it. And they've got pretty close. Comical but pITA if the wilds are sharing cooties.

I quit feeding the wild things also. I have enough to watch and to feed now. I did get a kick out of the statement that mites are a hygiene problem and that a person should change their clothing once a week and wash their linen and that should take care of the issue. You chickeners have helped me hugely and I a greatly encouraged.
