That is a Sandhill Crane! I've always seen them in pairs walking in the fields. They have really long legs and necks. Can any of you identify this bird sound? is it doves? it is a kind of cooing sound if you ignore the chickens. I have been enjoying being serenaded by the pheasants this week but this one is new to me. (Excuse my dirty window sill lol)
Quote: I would definitely get a second quote, that is just ridiculous!
Good luck tomorrow Ralphie! That is a sand hill crane!
I have them in my pasture a large part of the summer. They are about 20 pounds heavier than a dove...
Judy and I are back from Hutch. Whew!! What a day. Long..
I think we were the laughing stock of the show. Some to our faces others behind our backs. We had a good time, it was basically just Judy and I talking and working with the chickens like we would at home with a long drive thrown in. Judy did pretty good. It was her first time out of the house in almost a month.
Smith Poultry has a booth there, we bought a bunch of water and feed cups there. The prices are good. We are going to check on what the heated bases cost for the founts and maybe buy some of them too.
I might buy some small pigeon bands to mark my groups of chicks with next year.
They have little plastic cups. like wedding punch cups, for the chickens to drink out of. They were not good enough for our birds so we used a bunch of the new cups today. They have feed there but just expect you to throw it on the floor of the cage for the birds to peck at. Judy went and asked some guy about the water cups and the feed on the floor. I could tell he was laughing at us.
Some of the people are real nice, others are "different" so it is like the real world. I did not see any other Doms there. I do have some barred rock right next to my Dom's. I hope they get judged separately. His look larger than my Doms, but we all knew my birds were young.
I did not see any other PC's. I got a few good comments on them, and a ton of questions on the CLB's. I did hear one guy laughing about them and pointing them and saying nasty things about them. We will see what happens. Of course, the rooster both decide today is the day their crests will lie down and not stick out.
There are a couple other SS.
Not a lot of turkeys there, way too many ducks and geese there. I feel greasy from just walking throw the geese and duck barn...![]()
Some of the birds are amazing the white rocks are huge like turkey huge! Some off the bantam game birds are small. Like robin small! Interesting mix of birds there.
Some of the people treat there birds roughly, some baby them too much. I think I treat mine just right. I saw one guy haul his in by the legs and just throw them in the cage. Another guy was hugging and coddling birds, whispering to them and kissing them. He looked a lot like EJB.![]()
My SS have blood on them. When I was loading them this morning I put them in the same cage. They are hatch mates, and have lived together for their entire lives except the last month. They must have forgotten who the other one was. 2 minutes in the cage and they went at each other. Changed my entire transportation plans at that moment. The blod did not come off the white feathers!.. Stupid birds.
I did not see Minnie there but I saw she has some birds just down from me. The cages were empty when we left..
That's our day.
