Surviving Minnesota!

Well, this is Thursday morning - Dah! I have concluded that Hutchinson is out of the question for me to travel to this weekend. I will be working on and hopefully finishing up the mite issue in my chicken coop. I have bee diligent and consistent in my endeavor to prepare my basement and now the coop for winter and am almost at the end of the race. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. I need to keep on keeping on.

Coop question: So I have this small coop that the birds go into for the nesting boxes. I plan to rip it apart, vac it, spray it with a solution of Sevin and then paint it after it dries. Okay that is what I plan to do. Any other comments about that?

The covered run has had plastic attached to it. It has a bunch of studs with hardware wire attached to the studs. It is my intention to vac those studs (except for the base because that would involve tons of dust being sucked into the shop vac and what would that achieve?) And then spray the upright and roof with that Sevin Spray. The base I am thinking I will dust with the powder and then use a scrub brush and scrub the dust into the crevices. After doing that I will (have already raked out the covered coop) apply the dust to the dirt in the coop, making sure it gets into the crevices and then rake the floor again.

Apply Neem oil to all the roosts.

Is this good enough?
That sounds like a pretty good plan. Want to come do my coops, barn and brooder house too?

Okay - opinion time. I went to Bed & Bath Works this last Saturday while waiting to go do my grandma time. I bought two fragrance dispensers along with about 12 fragrances. One dispenser works, one does not. That is a 50% failure rate. So I drove from Big Lake to Albertville- a little over 13 miles so not a long ways - to return the dysfunctional fragrance dispenser. Today I exchanged the non-working one and purchased one more. I got home and one works and the other does not. Still at a 50% failure rate. Now I will return once more to exchange the fragrance dispenser.

Here is what I am thinking - that they need to make me happy. I am not happy. Time to travel to and fro. Petro to travel to and fro. An even exchange will not make me happy. What do you think? I am calling their corporate office tomorrow to tell my sad, sad story

and find out how bad they want to keep a customer.

My jacket already shipped today BC. That was FAST!

I almost forgot, I got me a PURPLE Carhart Vest last year! It is good for this time of year with a sweatshirt. Poop is poop, and if it gets on brown, purple or pink, I treat it the same. Broken eggs in the pockets requires washing no matter what the outside color is too.
I think one of my "pullets" is a cockerel. So Reba is probably Rueben. I am assuming he was the lesser cockerel and developed slower because he also has a limp so by no means dominate. Then when I butchered the roosters last Saturday he finally felt he had a chance to grow and grow he did. New saddle and hackle feathers comb turned bright red also. I have not heard a crow yet but I am pretty sure she turned to a he.

Had a shootout this afternoon with the church youth group. No one got shot so that is good. Haha

It is amazing how fast they can bloom into their manhood when their hormones kick in or they are no longer bullied by other roosters. I had a BLRW one year who I knew was a cockerel, but he was just lagging a lot with the other dominant rooster in the pen. Then Spring rolled around an in a week he went from pale and no male feathers to "POOF" full bloomin' rooster.

Morning . Think I will go to the sale barn this morning . Grandson will come over tonight to help on the roof for the weekend . Need to pickup another shingle / nail removing shovel . Removing all the roofing nails so I do not hit any with the screws while fastening the steel roof . Frost this morning . So garden is done for . Fall color has not peaked yet here . Running late on color . Usually most all leaves are gone by Halloween . Found my first deer scrape on the 19th .

heavy frost here in southern MN too. i forgot to cover the pumpkin pile, so hopefully they arent ruined. that is chicken feed for the rest of the fall.

I will be out placing deer scrape drippers on the back of my property today. trying to lure in some deer for me for firearm season. Corn is coming out so the deer are on the move finding food, time to bring them in. I'm excited for my first time deer hunting and will be spending some time this afternoon dialing in my scope a little more. One of my shooting buddies is coming over so we will be blasting for an hour or two today. always a good time.

Boom!!!!! it is official! the inspection took all of 10 minutes and we spent most of it talking about our future plans to build the house and him giving me some tips about what to expect with what we are doing. The inspector is a really nice guy!

Grats.

The inspectors I had here were pretty nice guys too, but he was into poultry and fell in love with JJ and Ethel.

The electrical inspector was a real nice guy too. He even gave me a hint on how I could get the electrical final before I finished the building.
