Surviving Minnesota!

How do you prepare the bones for the dogs? I was hoping the dogs could eat the bones from my quarters when I process them
Uncooked bones are better than cooked, even raw chicken or rabbit bones are fine for dogs. I freeze raw for them when we process birds/animals for the freezer. It is when you cook them down that they become more brittle and likely to splinter which is what causes them problems.

He saw the light.

I love your profile pic by the way, did you make that?
Nathan! I love that drake in the middle of your avatar!!!! What is he? Not a purebred from the color, but I just think he is gorgeous!!!

I want your duck, Holm! Now THERES an excuse to come to Minnesota! Gosh, the Minnesota thread is so much more exciting than the Virginia thread......the most exciting conversations we have are whether or not white chickens are pretty. I think its because of Ralphie.

It could be Ralphie, or it could be that us Northerners are more accustomed to having to find ways to entertain ourself from inside of the house for most of the year, therefore tend more to the story telling and creative communications ;)

Thanks! He is the son of a Buff Orpington drake and a Mallard hen.

Fin as a duckling...

and adult.

I made a video of him flying a little while ago, along with his sister who looks like a buff colored mallard, and my mallard drake.

I'll probably be hatching quite a few ducklings from him this spring, so if you want some let me know.

Your a duck fan?

Yes! I love them. My first ever bird was a little orphan duckling named Milton, and he was my first love. My mom? Not so much, that's why I don't have ducks right now. But I'm working on her. I hope to get three or four next year, and maybe hatch them myself, because I want more ducklings that think I'm mom!

Haha, either way, I like this crowd. You guys are funny. Lol

Oh cool! I hope you can get some soon!

Okay - now that i have caught up with four days of reading and know what you all are doing - deer hunting for the most part - congrats to everyone one of you that have venison to put into your freezer. The weather was beautiful but not so much for hunting deer.

I did alot of outdoor work and am still paying the price for it. Lots of aspirn and Advil PM. Sleepless nights because I am in pain. It is tough getting older and so therefore, I am more determined to STOP adding more to my lists of thoughts about - wouldn't it be nice to put strawberries in this place? What about hunting for those mushrooms? Oh! and I could take down that hedge around the garden and put in all blueberry plants for a hedge (which is probably a pretty good idea.)
Take good care of what I have and forget about creating more work to do.
If you want strawberry plants, come on down!!! We have hundreds of runners in our patch! My sister swears by ZzzQuil to get to sleep and says it doesn't leave you feeling like crap the next morning. I don't have trouble sleeping, so I haven't tried it. I do have it for next time our daughter is having an episode of insomnia though. Melatonin doesn't work for her (DD), it actually makes her ramped up, so I hope the Zzz will work better.
Oh I just read 'Chickens in the road' by the same author (McGinn?) that writes the post. It was okay in that she comes from the city and starts to farm and she writes about those experiences. It is good for a wanna be farmer. I am too elderly now to go through all that work and the strength is waning. But if I was 40 and starting this - ohhhhhhh would my DH have a run for the money!
If you want to read some funny farm stories, there is a local author down here named Catherine Friend who has written a few books. She is good for a belly laugh or two. She has a blog too that leaves me in stitches every time I read it too. Her first book is called, "Hit By A Farm" then there is "Sheepish".

BMD1234, cleared for take off on Runway 3-6. LOL (I used to be an air traffic controller and that paved area looks like a runway!)
Thanks for sharing the video, they look fantastic! Thanks for the offer, but no. I am out of ducks. I did it for a few years, but scaling back still and I definitely wouldn't need flyers around. If I change my mind, I know where to look, and I would be interested in good layers if I did.

He is a beautiful kitty cat! I would take him off your hands, but he and Jerome would rumble all the time, I just know it.

That must have been a awesome job! Your welcome! Oh okay!

Wow lots of posts . I cook the bones in half of a old water set on the turkey burner . I cook them because I feed them to hunting dogs . I do not want deer runners . Maybe it makes no difference but I believe it does .

I have decided to spend most of the summer at the lake building . Chickens and dogs coming with . Well back to cleanup .
