Surviving Minnesota!

Crappy rainy night here. The hens were still out in the dark doing stuff. Silly girls. Had to turn off the yard lights to put them to roost!

Looks like it's here to stay for the week too blech...

All this incubator talk is making me excited for spring hatching!! We are hoping for ol' biddy to go broody again plus we will hatch at the school again

We're getting forecasted 10-12 inches now

Do you have an incubator Klop?

Hope all is well for everyone. Haven't checked in for quite some time. My birds are all laying, and are healthy and happy. Bought the plastic for covering some of the run, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Heated waterer seems to be working well, and the 5 watt LED bulb on a timer has definitely sparked the laying. I have my first broody (a buckeye) and she's a stubborn pullet. Been almost 3 weeks now, I may have to get creative with her. We get between 6-9 eggs a day from 9 girls. I think id like about double the numbers, as our friends seem to wonder where our eggs are going but our family of 4 eats them all up!
Minnie - I did away with Facebook after the election, so sorry we haven't kept in touch! Hope all is going well for everyone as we enjoy the last days of what seems to be a never ending fall. After running power to the coop, my wife suggested I deck the halls of the coop/run too. Turned out nice!

Good to hear from you! Have you tried dipping her in cold water? It might be a little late in the year to do that now... Maybe put some snow under her lol?

Will you hatch any in those? Or just leave it to broodies?

hopefully both. if a broody sits, we will let her. we will hatch some in the incubator at the elementary school where my mom teaches. students were asking on the first day of school this fall if they would get to hatch chicks. it was a big deal in the school.

probably will hatch a batch here too. going to try and set up some deliberate crosses from my flock this spring.

I wonder if there will be any school tomorrow?

I don't know about us. We live over the river, the buses might not be out, but them my parents usually won't make us go in. We'll see though, our school board president and VP are both ranchers and one lives over the river so maybe they'll cancel, no point in delaying since its supposed to last 3 days
