Surviving Minnesota!

Jerry this is headed your way, enjoy it! I think we got lucky and missed most of the fun . We had rain and fog yesterday . Never got cold enough to freeze .

Some buyers are great, the few that are PITA's make it not worth it. I guess I am just feeling old.

That is why I do not sell much . I sell until I get the one PITA that just makes me stop .

We must be just getting too old and crotchety (or I am anyways) to deal with that crap. I don't need the hassle so why do it...

Well my husband and the two older girls set out for Wisconsin an hour ago. Taking the Duluth route to get there. I am not thrilled with the wind, roads, and that he is pulling a trailer with all of his spray foam and equipment. I pray it all travels well and they make it safely to my sister's cabin near Trego,WI. They will head to my moms tomorrow.
So tell me how things are looking along hwy 2 to the East?

MnNice. I am hope she follows the rules too, so much of it is just marketing. I could take them back, I suppose, and rehome them to the Nice Asian Lady in St. Paul. I understand being proud of your show birds. I am that way with my legbars especially the whites, The partridge Chanticler I got from EJB are amazing birds, the SS are not slouches but not as good as the others, The Yokohamas have not been seen by a judge but I like them even if they are from a hatchery.and of course the Dominiques from Urch are amazing birds ( yep, I am bragging, sorry),

I got my first Cuckoo Maran egg today. They are gone this summer. I am disappointed in the color if the egg. Hopefully they will get darker. They are my darkest egg but not the "chocolate" I had hoped for.

MnNice I will be breeding Royal Palms, Slates and bronze this spring. I will have some mutt turkeys but not sure how many. I have not decided if I want to breed blacks or not. I might go down to JJ and a few others and stop breeding turkeys too. Again, it is time and expenses I want to cut. If you want some breeders let me know. Come and see what I have if you want. Turkeys are fun to have around and are such pets.

Brag away! It's important to be proud of your show stock!

A friend of mine got some cuckoo's (hatchery stock) and they lay a light brown egg. She was peeved. I suppose with cuckoos and really any bird that is popular for egg color, it depends upon where you got them and what they breed for. I'd like to get some more Copper Marans next year, but I might try Welsummers and see what kind of eggs I can get from them.

I'd be interested in Royal Palms, so you'll have to let me know when you start hatching this Spring. I think I'll also get some Bourbon Reds. I haven't decided yet. They'll just be pets unless they're jerks.

God makes jerks to help us get over the guilt of eating our pets.

By cutting down on breeds I can concentrate on the better ones, I enjoy hatching but am not crazy about dealing with the hassle some buyers are. I am convinced every buyer that has a chick dies thinks it is my fault because they loved it to death or neglected it or whatever. Some buyers are great, the few that are PITA's make it not worth it. I guess I am just feeling old.

I forgot to comment on this because it is something that really pisses me off. It's the same with people who buy hatching eggs. What do they expect? I'd like to think it's the people who don't have much experience with poultry and/or common sense. If you let your 2 year old smother a chick and stick it in a Lego house.....well.....there's your sign. Now, I do understand being upset if you know how to brood, buy 12 seemingly healthy chicks, and half keel over. And hatching eggs are always a risk. People should understand that.

Ralphie I'd love to buy 2/3 of your Cuckoo's this spring! I just have the one and her egg color isn't as dark as I had hoped but I like her :) she's been a good broody.

Ralph I am thinking about getting rid of all the chickens and just keeping Buckeyes. I would have to keep my Cochin and Legbar hens but other than that none of the other chickens are that important to me.

@MinnesotaNice I think you'll need some Mottled turkeys too:lau

Just some pics from the last two days... The cows are looking fat and sassy and the birds are quite chubby!

Btw I am quickly becoming anti White Guinea! My White guineas are the nastiest little thing! The male white guineas are nice but the female is nasty!
