Surviving Minnesota!

I loved this post!!!

I actually laughed and the dogs looked at me like I was nuts!

The dog around here already knows I'm nuts

I love the fancy bloggy photo of Conway Dumpling Soup. He served his purpose.

And as Holm so eloquently put it I'm glad the roosters have ceased their crowing. Thin Walls are bad for over-zealous roosters' health there...LOL.

Junior is a busy man today. He tore down the chicken ramp into the run and tried to catch my buckeye Daisy, then tried to catch my BLRW Lucy. Not the Youngin's. I imagine those pullets are like trying to catch a road runner for him. I do suspect I will be delighted with today's nests when I get back home.
He is STILL a nice rooster. I mean I'd like to see him this spring on open grass with all those hens laying full on...but he doesn't even do the fake "Scratch and come over here Ive got a treat and then 'WHACK' manuever " He is just a nice nice bird. Perhaps I was too nice with Tootsie and he really was a Jack-butt. The kids still show some fear towards Junior but I've told them that he is much nicer than Rog and they should always watch his actions ...but he sure is human friendly. a good portion of Junior's point eschars are now gone. He's rounded off on the comb but there is still some distinguishable lobes to his comb. Unlike Rogers case.

During this warming trend I've left a SE window open in the coop the whole time. Let winter air dry out the coop a bit. My shavings albeit relatively new and clean are wet from the rainy misty weather we had last week. I hate changing them already...but I know the wet's not good for the birds. Weekend project for my birdies. Although I like being down there with them...so bonus. But cleaning coop not a favorite part of the hobby.

I was looking at the Illini on the roost here the other night at 'close the pop-door' time and the blue hens are good sized! They are obviously from Jerry and breeder birds (to be expected perhaps) , but am impressed as they line up next to Minnie's stock who are big big hens. The little Lavender seems to be just a tidge smaller--sort of like the legbar size. But her eggs are normal sized and she has been SUPER productive. That pullet has laid for me consistently this whole winter. And her color.... Amazing.

They are chickens from Illinois.

Jerryse brought some up to me this summer. Pretty spoiled I am. 2 blue Ameraucana and 1 lavender Ameraucana.

HAH! Of course it's something like that....I was thinking something realllllllly obscure hah. Some strange breed :p

Emorical are your dumplings the dense ones or do you do baking powder/soda in them so they are fluffy?

They are "supposed" to be fluffy - but I don't have a rolling pin - so wasn't able to get them rolled as thin as I would have liked. I like my dumplings like I like my men - dense/doughy

Loosely used this recipe for the chix and dumps - (Added a BUNCH more herbs into the broth during step one; used the broth for the dumplings instead of making them out of water; and thickened a bit with flour/cornstarch/milk combo) Enjoy!
