I planted some tomato seeds indoors the other day . Early I know but I had the urge . I will pot them up to large pots in time . Hey BC and Ralphie I am going to order some improved service berries /June berries . Some of those claim 3/4 fruit . I remember someone said something about SS with rose or cushion combs . Hmm my pullet is in with a silver duckling Leghorn with a rose comb . I guess I could set a few . Ralpie could try PC .
I think the PC would work, but they have a larger frame and slightly different frame. I think anything to get rid of the single comb then back to SS for a couple generations and it would be gone. BUT I could not show them then. I have great hopes for them. Especially after the Judge in New Ulm heaped such praise on them, and he raises SS.
I only have 3 breeds that realistically have a chance to win, that is my Doms, SS and PC. I hate to mess with any of them. The things is I did none of the work to get them where they are. My Dom's had the work done by Duane Urch. ( I think they are amazing birds) , the PC the work was done by EJB, they are great birds but I will now for sure where they are next fall at the national Chanticler club show in Hutch. Leaving my SS that were nothing but dumb luck and keeping the right ones to breed. I hate to mess with them.
I am working on smaller black bar on the SS and getting rid of the red on the feather stalk. Cuddles id real good on those, but his tail is a little to high and my other breeder has a good tail set but his barring vacuums.
This was such a bad winter, one of my PC has frostbite on the front of his cushion comb. My non-breeding (soup) Dom rooster I kept for a spare might have to be put down He has frozen toes and feet. Not sure how he will get around. The kind thing might be doing him in.
What a weird bad winter for frostbite. I think this is the only year in the last 5 years , I have lost birds to frostbite and cold.
@ejb3810 My Appletini egg is pretty large for a pullet, I am going to try and hatch it, worse that can happen is it won't hatch. It is how well they do in the cold and how little they eat. I keep worrying they are not eating anything but they all seem healthy and happy.
Jerry what zones are those June berries for?
I am moving my SS hens inside this weekend so I can better control their mating. I need to build more cages.
Holm you and your family can come down tonight and spend the next 3 days in my "renters" house. She is gone, I could use the free labor.
I have goose decoys, I shall try them!
