Surviving Minnesota!

Does she seem good again or lethargic? If she's lethargic consider she might have a reproductive tract infection.

What would you do for that? Antibiotic? How would you know if it is bacterial or not? Just curious, I kind of take a wait and see with mine and if they live great. If not Bummer.

I was in Fleetfarm the other day I see they still had antibiotics in the locked case. Nothing said you needed a prescription, but that could be in fine print and you know how I am with that.

She seems good - I have her in the (spare) bathroom in a box with some towels to hang out for the night. I am going to keep her in a quarantine pen for a bit (outside pen) - away from the pesky rooster for good amount of time for sure.

I bet it was just a one time thing then. Does she lay regularly? When will she lay again, if you know?

There are some weird egg membrane things that can happen and this appears to me that this is such a thing. I bet she was about crazy trying to get this moved on out. It may be a sign of Fallopian tube or reproductive issues or just a misfire in the egg production line if she's young.

Agree with this. Also, as ralphie said do not worm right now, that is not a worm. Maybe a lash egg or something like it. You should not have to worm them yet, they are very young. Get some proibiotics and electrolytes for their water. Give her an epsom salt bath, that always perks my girls up when they are off.

She is one of my most regulars yes - I've been kinda annoyed at the girls the past 3 days (excluding today; today I had 5 eggs) I have been getting one or no eggs. So I thought I had been doing good with "we should get these 3/4 eggs today" but for some reason or another their entire laying cycle has been off this past week. I think it had something to do with the 50 degree + weather we've been having and they decided to go on vacation.

Gosh you guys are so smart. At what age do you need to worry about worms??? I have a spare bag of electrolytes from when we moved so I'll mix that up for them

Thanks!

I think the weather has them confused, I get good days and bad days and it has no rhyme or reason that I can see.

Does anyone else have cuckoo marans? I thought mine were eating eggs I was getting so few eggs from them. I put them in rollaway cages and I still get very few eggs. I talked to a person today that had them and got rid of them because they laid so seldom , maybe once or twice a week...

Just wondering.

It depends on your soil, how much they free range, how many earth worms they eat. sand like ralphie has, you probably never need to worm. I have clay, and a lot of earth worms. So I have a much higher chance of getting a worm infestation. But i still wait and see. Is she super thin? Have you seen any worms?

I noted the buckeye had foamy eyes again today. With the barometric pressure changes this happens to her. It's so weird. But was 4/4 on eggs so not complaining.

Ralphie yes to antibiotic to treat reproductive issues. Sometimes the damage is done already when the first symptoms show-- scarred off tube-- and the hen has fought the bacteria on her own. I think with those infections you go right for the big guns-- baytril. I personally have not been one to treat it. baytril is $50 for a hen's dosing from the rip off vet in town. But if EMoricals birds are on the pet spectrum that would be the treatment. And I wouldn't blame her a bit. As I've obviously considered and researched it. But I'm sure I was too late anyways. That's the difficulty with it.

My marigold has fought it off. She laid eggs for one year. Was weird and squatty for a week and never an egg thereafter. She will be 5 in June. I can't whack her because she's an original and I love her coloring.

I can understand this, I have my own freeloaders too. I can't even get the one to stop sleeping the nest box. BUT I have asked her nicely to consider a roost again someday.
