Surviving Minnesota!

I have placed JJ in the gas chamber. He is asleep and soon to be gone. Sad for us, He was a great pet, friend and turkey Tom.

I have to disagree with this EJB and we seldom disagree, I got far more joy out of his companionship than the pain the last couple days have been. If I add up the plusses and the minuses of having a turkey for a pet, the plusses are a thousand to one against the minuses. We had a lot of good days together followed by a couple bad ones. That's life.

A guy on another thread when talking about animals as pets said (paraphrasing) Unless you have parrots, turtles and elephants for pets you have to know they will leave you.

I have had livestock for pets most of my life, it does not make it easier, but I know I will have more livestock for pets in the future. Of course at my age the chances of them out living me get greater each go around.

In theory I agree with you on cats, but in practice I end up getting attached to them too...

Matter of fact OC came up to me tonight and let me pick him up without having to bribe him with food.

Now I have to decide if I work on training JJ Jr to be a lapper or not. Sidekick just does not have the right personality, he is a half step above dinner, if that even. The only reason he is still alive is because he was JJ's buddy and friend.
I am so sorry Ralphie...

Gotta agree with that. I make my critters pets knowing that it is likely I'm going to have to say goodbye sometime... I just treasure every moment that I get with them.

Sorry Ralphie

Life sucks! What you said is well- said. Pure and simple. Love the animals and be able to let them go when the time comes. Very difficult.

EJB I am going to take this as a learning experience.

I am bad with not making my birds pets... I would love for my turkeys to be pets. Chickens are not pets here... Ok maybe they are too...

Raising a glass of bourbon here in Tennessee...cheers to JJ.

Fur or feather, a friend is a friend. They do worm their way into your heart. Cherish the memories.

Ralphie, sorry to read that JJ did not recover. I respect your eloquent statement regarding the birds, but it is not my outlook on things. Hopefully one of your other birds will find his way to take up for JJ ?

More bad news is that they are forecasting additional snow. It would have been nice to be rid of it for the season, but then again I am not located in the Minnesota Banana Belt !

Good Morning! I am sorry for all the loses this weekend. My loses weekend were all intentional. We butchered 9 extra roosters that were growing out so there was enough meat for soup birds. Now when I go out it seems like I have a much smaller flock! Which I guess I did cut it by probably 20% butchering those 9 birds. Hopefully my hens will be much less stressed and start lying more again. I did charge my light battery too so that should help also.

I have to call in for feed today. We order 500lbs at a time from the local feed mill. When we are raising CX we order 1000 lbs at a time. 500lbs is I think about $105.00. So not bad. Plus the manager lives out by us and usually delivers it to our house also. I also have to get out the incubator and wash it out and get it set up to start setting eggs. I am heading down to St. Cloud this weekend and am going to Ralphie's to get some eggs. I will flood his farmyard with 5 children who will love up on those kittens for him and at least 2-3 that may be found catching chickens when our backs are turned. LOL So if you need something caught on Sunday Ralphie we can help with that!

Hope everyone has a good week!

I can't remember where in Northern Minnesota you are located but over here on the western side of North we are at 40% chance and it says a chance of flurries or snow showers. I don't think it will be much if at all. Unless someone starts a snow dance and we DO NOT need that. 30 for a high today. High 20s and melting again by the weekend. My year old daughter is lamentating that she doesn't want more snow because she wants to ride her dirtbike. I just don't want to be cold anymore!
