Surviving Minnesota!

Holm - is that the chick in your recent pictures? I really, really liked her!

BC - so do I still let them free-range when I have already seen the eagle fly? It sure was pretty. Ralphie - it was about eye level with me while I sat at the table and it flew along the river going up river.
I wouldn't Ivie: I'd be penning them up too. Mix up their schedules. The eagles have excellent memories. They get so they learn your schedule and times of days you let out or what have you. Chickens have their little schedules too. So while the eagles are along the river I'd get your birds in the pen.... I also have seen that Bird Bangers are okayed by the DNR for migratory bird control (mostly for geese in crop fields) but I believe it applies to birds of prey on farms as well. Shipping on the Bird Banger is high. Due to the ammo for those things. Might see if Runnings or a Farm and Fleet would be willing to order one in for you. Maybe they can get a better deal on shipping with some of their sources....? I would also consider cover down by the river for the chickens if they like going down there. Some sort of woody bush/ thorny blackberry...what have you. Or a little shelter or hut for them to scurry under.

I got a chocolatey color the other day too! No clue who laid it! I suppose I will know if it hatches. Also a pretty little "Olive" colored egg that I sent home with Mom of many. I call it Olive but some people might think it's green. It's the darkest green I have ever got before!

The bucks can lay a darker egg I think Holms. I'm so sorry about "Brat" Gosh she sure melted my heart. Sometimes things happen for a reason and passings are a blessing. It's like with June Carter. She was always sort of a 'special' bird. She got along okay but dragged behind or was dominated all the time. And although she was adorable with her dark eyes and big puffy beard...she probably wasn't cut out for my yard.

RIP Brat.
Whiskey Creek Poultry sounds good.
You could adjust the name a bit too, Holms like Whisky or Whiskie....LOL.

Thanks all for compliments on the eggs. It is so much fun to have those variations.

The olive egg is from a blue Ameraucana.

RAlphie, Ivie,Cluckies, MNChickMom...and all Banana Belters and Coconut Growers Glad you are all okay and kickin' . Be Safe.

We had one little warm shower at about 4:45. It hit the artic circle snow pack and it was instant foggy out. Crazy weather.

If you don't like Minnesota Weather wait 5 minutes right?

It is definitely what I would call olive. It is very dark green! In 20 days we will see what comes out of it.

So here is an update. Ralphie and Judy headed into Runnings in Monticello. While they travel I and the DH called. DH called Home Depot - they had ONE 6000 Watt generator. I called Runnings and they said I was their only call about generators and they had quite a few. Haven't heard from Ralphie since that time - about an hour ago. Both of them are pretty busy right now.

Bogtown - thanks for thoughtfully sharing your knowledge with me. IF I could keep the hens on the river bank they would have plenty of cover. It would be difficult for an Eagle to fly in and out with all the trees and shrub. But the little gippers do not listen to me. I still think I need another roo. I have 19 hens which is way too many for Reggie and as I said - he is a homebody. Doesn't wander too far from home. Tom Hanks was all over the place and do not even think of looking at his girls. But back then he only had seven.

Holm - so sorry about Brat. I really liked that chick. She rates up there with BC's Daisy.

I did skip my DGS concert in Watertown at 7 tonight. The weather was still very iffy to take the car out of the garage and into the storm.

Oh! And before the storm I had all the hens into their run but not all locked into their covered run. The wind blew the door closed and when I went out to check on them there were four gold comments sitting in a corner between the run and the garage huddled together. Poor Girls. But they are clean now. Checked later and they were roosting as usual. Its funny how blind chickens are in the dark.

Yeah 19 might be high for Reggie. Especially with the two Adventurers. Perhaps those two gals have a good hiding spot where they only come out until the eagles are gone...?

We have a generator to air condition an RV. It's a noisy one though...Not a nice quiet Honda. Plus it's almost 150 miles north of Ralphie.

I get a bang out of the chickens in the dark on the roost too. tonight though ...at dusk--still some daylight left..Junior was so sleepy he could barely keep his eyes open. Head drooping. Poor Roos. So many jobs to keep up with. They are busy boys. Sylvia still leading the older hens away from him. Drives him nuts....hahaha.

Wish I could help ralphie but the only generator we have is hooked up to a tractor and running a milking parlor in Gilman now, apparently some downed trees caused isolated power outage.

BC thank you :hugs

I am positive it's not a Buck. I have seen all their eggs and they are light brown and large. This was really dark and small.
