I wouldn't Ivie: I'd be penning them up too. Mix up their schedules. The eagles have excellent memories. They get so they learn your schedule and times of days you let out or what have you. Chickens have their little schedules too. So while the eagles are along the river I'd get your birds in the pen.... I also have seen that Bird Bangers are okayed by the DNR for migratory bird control (mostly for geese in crop fields) but I believe it applies to birds of prey on farms as well. Shipping on the Bird Banger is high. Due to the ammo for those things. Might see if Runnings or a Farm and Fleet would be willing to order one in for you. Maybe they can get a better deal on shipping with some of their sources....? I would also consider cover down by the river for the chickens if they like going down there. Some sort of woody bush/ thorny blackberry...what have you. Or a little shelter or hut for them to scurry under.Holm - is that the chick in your recent pictures? I really, really liked her!
BC - so do I still let them free-range when I have already seen the eagle fly? It sure was pretty. Ralphie - it was about eye level with me while I sat at the table and it flew along the river going up river.
I got a chocolatey color the other day too! No clue who laid it! I suppose I will know if it hatches. Also a pretty little "Olive" colored egg that I sent home with Mom of many. I call it Olive but some people might think it's green. It's the darkest green I have ever got before!
The bucks can lay a darker egg I think Holms. I'm so sorry about "Brat" Gosh she sure melted my heart. Sometimes things happen for a reason and passings are a blessing. It's like with June Carter. She was always sort of a 'special' bird. She got along okay but dragged behind or was dominated all the time. And although she was adorable with her dark eyes and big puffy beard...she probably wasn't cut out for my yard.

You could adjust the name a bit too, Holms like Whisky or Whiskie....LOL.Whiskey Creek Poultry sounds good.
Thanks all for compliments on the eggs. It is so much fun to have those variations.
The olive egg is from a blue Ameraucana.
