Surviving Minnesota!

Speaking of ...."Token Birds" If you are not interested in a longish story; or do not condone eating extra roosters - please scroll! Lost my lil banty/serema roo "Merle" last fall. (RIP little Merle!) So on Friday last week, when I saw an ad on a swap site for "Free Bantam Roosters" I thought YAY! I can find a replacement! The first "hmmmm" should have been there was no photo. But they were about a year old and I thought well - I'll get them; find out which one (or two....) suits my flock the best - and then we can have little chicken nuggets from the others. No biggie. Right. Right? They were located 2.5 hours away and it just so happened that my brother was coming down THAT night to visit and that he would just happen to be able to stop after work to meet "Chicken Dude" and pick up these roosters for me. The second "hmmmm" should have been when my brother called me and told me that he couldn't fit his pick-up bed cover over the boxes and that he just ratchet-strapped them in for the drive. (Why so big of boxes? Banty roosters should almost fit in a shoebox on your lap?!) So, fast forward a few hours, after celebrating St. Patty's day with a few Irish drink etc with my family.... My DH and I are headed out the door headed home when I casually mention that there's something we need to load into the pickup..... The first box was surprisingly heavy. The second box, not so heavy, let out a massive "CHOOK CHOOK" when we moved it and yet I still thought "ohhhhh.....must be the whiskey!!!" (Third "hmmmmm") Imagine our surprise when we got home and opened the boxes up and found out we had the BIGGEST ROOSTERS WE HAVE EVER SEEN IN OUR LIFE. Nine of them! Into the quarantine pen they go; and to bed we go. So. Long story short. We have several pounds of frozen chicken breasts; and a new "Token" in my barn. I saved the best! Or so I thought. What do you think?
Gotta love those big Cochins. I like my standards more than the bantams :thumbsup Beautiful roo Emorical.

I made a change yesterday with my Foo-Foo's. I got tired of the rooster I had. He is either going to Pierz or the soup pot, I am not fussy which. He attacked me for the last time. He was not a happy rooster in his cell. I was thinking of changing rooster based on looks, so this guy lost twice. The new guy kind of had the gals worried they were trying to hide from him. Here is the new guy: And watch the girls reaction to the new guy.. IT is funny they were giving him a cold shoulder I think...
I think your polish are stunning Ralphie! Cant wait for my babies to get that big!

I would have used her as a incubator service. And she had a missing skull component?? My last pet penny rip was going blind some sort of cataract. She was the ee in my profile pic. I'm thinking my token bird would be a frizzle or a jersey giant. Hard part is finding a frizzle around here
I've got my big cochin breeder and a black pullet show Cochin for my Frizzles along with a bantam

I've been looking for a splash Cochin cockerel for a month! I need one so bad to breed to that Black Frizzle pullet! The hard part is finding one.. I found a splash cockerel and they want to sell but "don't have a box big enough to ship him" I offered to pay for the box but they said no they will wait and see if anyone will pick him up.. it's been a week or so so we will see...

I don't have any "plans" for him, specifically (Was going to take him to New Salem Exotic Sale in May) I just thought he was BEAUTIFUL....too beautiful for the crock pot haha. I only had 1 splash in the bunch- the rest were pure white; black; and then the black/red/sometimes greenish feathers. And I thought he had the best conformation - nice tight butt poof (whats the technical name hahah?) and nice compact body. PM Me if you wanna!

He is pretty cool~ What do the ladies think?

I just have him hanging out in the "barn" quarantine for a bit. He has some old hens that aren't laying for company and he seems such a gentleman to him!!! I'm completely positive my current rooster would go all ninja on him; and I'm not entirely confident that New Fuzz Butt Roo (aka, Cochin monster) has enough skills to keep my free rangers safe. So for now I go out and visit him and give him treats and listen to him "chook chook" and decide what I want to do. Sooo flufffffffy......
