OMG - new rule of ole Lvie. Turn on the stove and cannot leave the kitchen. I always forget something is on. Or leave my computer in the kitchen. I must stay in the kitchen! No problems but there could be one day. This is amazing to me. I used to be able to juggle five balls in the air (not literally) but five different things happening when I workd - at one time - five things. Come to me with a sixth item and have to wait your turn. Now I am to the point of staying in the kitchen once I turn on a burner on the stove. Okay - now I HATE getting older. Adjust. Must adjust.

I'm chomping at the bit this morning to get home and see if she's going to let them out from under her today!!

3 more days until my cochins hatch. I am honestly more excited for the next batch with the black cockerel over all the hens then this one!

Happy to have found a Minnesota thread! My husband and I are hoping to start a small backyard flock of 3-4 hens in Minneapolis this spring. Does anyone in the area have experience buying/adopting chicks or pullets from sources other than traditional hatcheries (small farms, rescues, etc.)? Any recommendations?

WELCOME!! You've already gotten a bunch of great info from all the experienced chickeners here but I guess I can put my newbie two cents in... I have Barred Rocks, Wyandottes, and Blue Cochins. My Barred Rocks are VERY friendly and come running to me when ever they see me (could be the treats - but who can tell right?) my Cochins are very stand offish - like they are too good for the rest of us middle classers...my Wyandottes are skiddish but pretty and they lay smaller pale eggs. My Barred Rocks are by far the best egg layers out of the flock. BUT...2 of my Cochins went broody this spring so we are expecting lots of chicks

I bought the Cochins for two reasons, 1: they are soooo pretty, and 2: for their broody ways!

Oh my gosh, how exciting! Keep us posted!

Hey chickeners - Harriet Hens started a new forum called Hello From Minnesota on BYC. Brand spankin new! Thought you might want to check it out for the fun of it.

Any suggestions on other forums I should be checking out.

Ralphie - I am not ignoring your pain in the head. Sorry about it that. Take it easy and drink lottsa H2O too. It helps everything.

Siggie - can't wait to hear more. I have never hatched an egg let alone have a broody.

I know it's a pretty common occurrence for many of you on here, but for me it's just such a great experience and yes, very exciting!! I can't wait to see if they are a mix of colors because I have two roosters - one Blue Cochin and 1 Barred Rock...so anything can happen

so...while we are on the subject of chickens.... now that I know we have some live chicks, I have replaced all water dishes with shallow waterers, and all feed has been switched over to starter feed with oyster shells available for the hens. Is there anything else I missed?

Morning fellow chickeners...so spent til the wee hours of the morning in the ER with the DH ... (WARNING - graphic) he has been diagnosed with stomach flu. He came home from work last night and would not even eat dinner! I KNEW he was sick because he ALWAYS eats! He went to bed at 6:30pm and when I went to bed at 10p I asked how he was doing and he replied...we need to go to the ER. okee dokee....so I got back out of bed, got dressed and drove him the 45 miles to the ER and there we sat......all the important stuff was checked, no internal bleeding, no sepsis, no kidney stones, just some horrible stomach cramps, nausea, and the hershey squirts (sorry). Took us over an hour to get home because we kept having to stop so he could throw up. Yay... 3.5 hours of sleep and back to work. Here's to hoping I don't get what he's got!!

Actually my Buckeyes are great layers. I get 3 eggs a day from 4 hens AND nothing will replace them because they are my babies
