Surviving Minnesota!

Depends on your set up. With mine they are able to get in and out. My ramp into the coop isn't very steep.
The beauty of keeping them together is what integrates them so you don't have to. Broody momma takes care of it all. The first time was most stressful (for me) Until I saw how the broody took care of everything.

When pulling eggs for a broody clutch you can keep them in an egg carton and shift them two times a day with a paperback book or something you want the egg yolks slightly rocked from one side to the other to avoid chicks being stuck in shells etc. do not wash the eggs and if handling them wash your hands before collecting or touching them. Once you have a clutch for your broody just place them gently one at a time in front of her and she'll roll them with her beak under her plucked breast and be good to go.

Oh it's fun!

Having the experience a a wonderful, broody, RIR this past summer - there is no other way. Her chick, Shimmer, is now eight weeks old and Rosie just began laying again this past week. The Mama and baby are always babbling back and forth to each other all - day - long. I seriously do not know how she can be so patient. And Mama kind of acts like the roo does when he finds treats for his girls. She completely takes care of the chicks and makes the other hens step in line. No better way to get chicks then through a brood hen.

Omg wherever I read that said Brahmas like to stay close to home, lied. These darn chicks cover all 2.5 acres of my building site on a daily basis. So far they've stayed clear of the highway but I go out and find them at least twice a day to make sure they are sticking around the joint.

Anyone have any good reading on chicken herd dynamics? It's cracking me up that the Rooster lets the head hen do all his dirty work. Scary kitten? Rooster runs, head hen (Kevin) steps up and gives the kitten the evil eye or a peck if she gets too close. Of course if there's sun flower seeds, then the Roo is first in line.

And what's the story on this? Roo is standing on one foot (not that unusual I imagine) but Kevin is literally sitting. Like on her butt with her legs out in front.
