Surviving Minnesota!

Can I ask where you are from?

And if you send us your address we can ship you a Fisher, Mink, Wolf or other fur bearing critter...

Winona County, apparently the Miami of MN if you ask someone they interviewed about our recent top 10 trip advisor city win (I have literally never heard that before she said it ). We do typically stay a little warmer than the rest of the state I guess, but sometimes our little corner gets stuck in some kind of snow vortex and it'll just dump 3 feet on us. We do have plenty of weasel and mink in some areas of the county because of the river so you can keep those ones! I rent from my grandma and my cousin used to keep her poultry at my house too, and a weasel came in and wiped out her silkies, she found like 6 of them stuffed in a milk crate. The coyotes picked off the rest of her stuff. I keep mine in a pretty big fenced in field and haven't lost anything recently *knock on wood*

You should be flattered they like you more, clearly we are lacking something down here and must be inferior! I'll have to figure out what it is we seem to lacking in... ;)
Whatever we've got that attracts them, you may have it. :P

Whoo! You live in the tropics, eh? Are we invited to your place to sunbathe when it's -45 up here and the winds are howling?

Definitely! It'll probably only be about -10 or -15, so naturally the lake will be full of sunbathers! We could have a grill out, and enjoy the wonderful weather!

You are too generous, helping the less fortunate achieve greatness, and new critters! :D

Winona is not that far out of the Banana Belt. Maybe 150-200 miles is all....

I thought you were in New Mexico or something..... Other than the river you do get hard water during the winter....

I have never heard it called "Win" ether....I assume the trip advisor was in ManHat...(see I shortened that in his honor) When he wrote that.

You have rattlesnakes down there....Hence you will not see me visiting there in the Summer.... I would like to mushroom down there, BUT snakes beat mushrooms...

Oh no, still a good ole Minnesotan. Just barely, since we are right on the WI border, and only about 40 mins from the Iowa one haha. Not really sure how Winona ended up on the top 10 cities to visit in the US list. It was something TripAdvisor put out, but even looking within MN, not sure how Winona got picked. Duluth usually wins all other cities to visit lists if smaller MN towns are on it.

My dad loves to go out for Morels, he usually gets quite the haul every year. It was kind of slow this year though, not as many as usual. I have never seen a rattler around here, I know they pop up, and the south facing, non-tree covered bluff sides attract them for sure! My dad used to hunt them with one of his friends back when it was legal. My dad would love if you came down and shared your knowledge on shrooms. We recently branched out to trying some pheasant backs, but other than that we are a little wary of picking the wrong ones. We once had ginseng on our land too, but someone stole it, and it's never come back that we've found.

Sweet! I'll make sure to be there.

Aren't I awesome? So much nicer than Ralphie the mean old duck hater. Stick with me---I share my bears. :highfive:

I don't understand all the duck hate lol. I love my Scovies. Though they are less duck like, than true ducks. They're quiet, big enough to eat, and don't make nearly the mess with water. They still have huge messy poops though :hmm

Anyone who is willing to share their bears with me, is A ok!

Though, if someone were willing to share their shroom knowledge as well.... they just may be A ok too... :D;):frow

I apparently love to over use smilies, please, forgive me!

Winona is the land of apple orchards in Minnesota, correct? Beautiful in the river valley there in the fall.
I never saw a rattle snake in the wild when I lived in Iowa, so I suspect them to be rarely sited in your area ?
You will soon have the Great Gray Wolf if not already. They will migrate in from the North and dine on the deer herd there.

I haven't heard anything about wolves in our area, but it is possible I suppose. We have a lot of deer in Winona and the surrounding counties. I know people have caught Cougars, and Bear on trail cameras occasionally, but I've never heard anything about wolves? Some areas have no bag limit on deer, and they were letting land owners shoot as many as they wanted (or like 12? same thing right haha) to just thin them.

I think as far as rattlesnakes go in the state, we have a really high population, but I do think you're right, and people don't run into them very commonly. It's not something I really worry about, or am afraid of being here.

La Crescent is the apple capitol of the state. Part of it is in Winona, the other part is in Houston. We do have many, many orchards around here.

I have to agree that it's beautiful here. We have a very unique part of the state, and I forget how flat the rest of it is until I leave here hehe. We used to call the bluffs mountains as kids. They are high enough to make your ears pop sometimes!

I apparently have no idea how to put a picture in here :he
