Surviving Minnesota!

In my search for answers in years past here is what I remember . Transmission is on young chicks and by dander of . Once said to be in the first two weeks of age . Later it was discovered it could be later also but still young . In my experience it shows symptoms at around 6 months of age . So I think showing is not a concern . So if you hatched or bought chicks in 2017 do not hatch or buy in 2018 . By spring of 2019 you will be free of Marecks virus . I have never had a bird recover . Some say they have . Bad idea as it can infect others . Cull all sick birds .

The USDA vet told me not all birds that are carriers would show outward signs. I think she said 80% of a flock is infected but less than 40% would show signs...I think..BUT at my age one can never be sure what they are recalling..

Ok this is my disease policy . You do what you feel is best for you . I have no medicines for chickens . Only blood stop powder . Seldom use it . I kill all sick birds . No exceptions . I used to treat coryiza . Recovered birds carry the virus dormant . Under stress like in winter the immune system can not keep it dormant . So you have a outbreak and new cases on birds not already infected . The cycle goes on and on . I had a case in a Legbar last years . Original hen from Heidi . Held off and a pullet got it . Killed them both no cases since . Fowl pox same thing . Spread by mosquitos . While you are treating one bird mosquitos are spreading it to others . Stop the cycle .

Laringo . A few years ago my Grandson wanted barred rocks . Bought some at the sale barn . Appeared healthy . Isolated them . In a week or so I saw huge blood clots on the ground . Killed them all . Boiled the carcasses in a hot water tank over the turkey burner . Feed them to the 2 pigs I was raising . Put ducks in that area as they can not get it . No outbreak . My first and only experience with Laringo . Seller obviously was getting rid of all his birds that showed no symptoms due to a outbreak .

Ralphie, you know Mike was not getting rid of infected birds but only not taking a chance on being exposed to some at the show.
Don't want people to get the wrong impression.
That was not what I meant.. Mike would never sell a sick bird. I needed his bird to improve my flock. I had tp beg him to sell it to me.
