Surviving Minnesota!

Tfred, I store my eggs in a strofoam egg carton, they don’t dry out prematurely. Then if you have to resort to incubator, run the incubator in the location you intend to incubate for at least 24 hours. A small interior room works great. Do not allow direct sunlight or you could have a temp spike....killing all the embryos. I dip my eggs in 120 degree water with 1 part bleach to 20 parts water to sanitize before putting in incubator. Some people do not dip, and use the bloom that naturally occurs. I prefer to dip and gently scrape poo off. Make sure you have a separate thermometer/hygrometer and don’t rely solely on the incubators info.

Ditto....unless I am being lazy ,,,,,then the eggs just lie around wherever I lay them....BUT that gives me the pleasure of whining about a bad hatch and no idea why.....

I agree the broody momma is easiest. I have heard of people trying to promote broodiness by putting golf balls or fake eggs in the nest box.

I don’t have any experience with trying to get them to be broody, I usually have the reverse problem.

I put half a dozen gold balls in one of the three boxes. They seem to be using that box, but was hoping to encourage them.

BC if you won't be going to Orrock soon I could pick up your eggs from Ralphie and you can pick them up here? depends when the kindergarten wants them.. ?
Ok thank you all. This would probably be a late April set again with hatching in mid May. I’d like sooner but I don’t have a teacher’s schedule to tend to.

MNChickMom I’m interested in some orps, maybe RiRs..

Ralphie... ss for sure I’ll ask my friend if she wants any of the others.

Erli you are so awesome. I might have to road trip down to the farms for the huevos. But that’s ok. I’ll get more specifics from Shannon and get back to you.
