Surviving Minnesota!

Another cow is calving... This will be this cows last calf... We will breed her back this summer but she will likely just go to the slaughter house from the salesbarn this fall... She is starting to show a little age... Her calf last year was one of the smallest steers... No use in keeping a cow who can’t do her job around...

I’m not sure what to do... I don’t usually try and “fix” chicks with issues... I get too attached to the special babies... Best of luck with the little guy...
Yeah it’s too late for me not to be attached. :lau

Hopefully your calf from her is huge just so she can prove you wrong. Always sad to have to let go of an animal that’s been around for a while. But it happens sooner or later.

At what point do I need to start putting aprons on these gals? 2 of the 3 hens are starting to get small bald spots. I'm guessing as soon as they start venturing outside more when the snow decides to leave us in July, Mr Rooster will cool his heels a bit and give the girls a break?

Grumpy old man, can you give me more info on this ether you speak of? I do want to be prepared in case someone is suffering and needs to “sleep” right away instead of later when I figure out how.

Also, what meds would you guys suggest having on hand...like a chicken first aid kit.

On meds the best is a hatchet . Yes I am serious . So many illness are viral . A recovered bird is a carrier . Viruses become active again when birds are under stress . They then infect birds that do not have the virus . Second tip feed medicated chick starter . I cull any sick bird . No exceptions .
