Hey we are going into lockdown on the same day I’d do two batches... I’m not trying to enable but come on... You need a lot of babies...

It's not the number of chicks (although space is a concern) so much as it's being a first-timer trying to both have a brooder in the garage for a few months and also trying to separate momma and chicks somewhere in he coop for a few weeks.

It has worked well for me to let mama raise babies with the rest of the flock from very early on. Last year I had a broody take her babies out with the flock within 24 hours. If I can separate the broody in the coop while she sets, I will give them a few days before integrating.

Here's my brooder setup. 4×6 plywood with 2' sidewalls. I've got it sectioned in half for when they're little and need more heat. Also have it covered with some clear corrugated polycarbonate. Can see in, hold heat in, allows moisture out.

I'll build a chicken wire cover for when they're older. I want 4 pullets to keep. Otherwise I'm not really sure what my end game is yet. May have some PC available.

This cow might not have the prettiest top line but boy is she fleshy. Really nice cow that raises nice calves... She had an average sized bull calf today...

This cow isn’t a monster but her calf was a big guy. Could put a marble in this girls and it wouldn’t go anywhere... Her top line doesn’t look as pretty in the pics as she just got done giving birth lol...

Hope the birth pic doesn’t bother anyone... If it does I can take it down lol..

We are now at 11 bull calves and 4 heifers... We have 5 left.. One of the five has a heifer every year and another is a second calf so who knows... The rest are half and half on bulls and heifers so they could have anything. One of the last isn’t scheduled to calf until end of May.... So we won’t have all of our calves close but so far we are at 15 calves in 18 days which isn’t bad at all...

We have 15 total calves right now, 14 are tagged, the one calf has one heck of a helicopter mom and we haven't been able to get close. So far there are 11 bulls 3 heifers


The day was all fine and dandy until one little puddle ruined my day after track
