Sussex hens

:)Hi and thank you to all who were nice enough to send a welcoming reply to a newcomer. I live in North Georgia. I've been a lot of places, North, South, East and West, and my heart and body will always be in Dixie. Thank God being southern is not equivalent to stupid. I have spent a little time in Kentucky, Ohio, Colorado and West Virginia Loved it there. I am a Kentucky Colonel (since 1979) and right proud of it. I have threatened to put my dog and my clothes in the car and stop when I get to Kentucky,
My family members are mostly in Georgia and there is something about the Georgia red clay and these mountains that have a hold on me. I can see heat lightening in the Southwest tonight, and it sure is pretty. My chicks are doing fine. I have some concerns about the owl that roosts near the yard and the hawks. But Hennypenny has plenty of hidey holes and the owl sleeps wakes up after she has bedded down. I'm in a valley between two mountains and some of the view is pretty. I told my husband to find other lodgings in 05'. It hurt so bad it almost killed me, but he had been unfaithful for awhile. I may be old fashioned, but I was raised different from that. My son and his family stay with me now and it feels good to have life around me again.
My dog is a good listener, but she isn't much of a talker. I will be back later on, I have some questions, and more going on right now than I can keep up with. Take care and God bless. Deb

I inherited another hen, about the same time as Henny Penny, she's also a Sussex with beautiful colorations. She disappeared for awhile, and we looked everywhere feasible, everyday, but Chicken Little had seemingly flown the coop. We thought someone had taken her.
I do not believe there is a place on the planet where chickens live, and no [ugh]chicken fighters! They will steal other peoples chickens and not give it a thought. Happy surprise this morning. Chicken Little showed up with six little brown peepers with black stripes on their back. They are about as close to identical as they can be. On my very first post, I reported Henny Penny as having 14 babies. Wrong. When we finally got an accurate count, we had 17. A few years back, my son cleaned out an attic area at his jobsite. He found a nest of baby birds, so newly hatched they were like transparent blobs of jelly. My daughter in law, Lena,
determined to raise them with almost everyone telling her it was impossible. It took feedings approximately every 5 minutes at first. She kept a daily diary of their progress.
Gradually feathers began to manifest and finally, 6 little blackbirds followed every step she took, inside and outside. It was a sad time for all of us when they flew away. A gentleman from Church banded their legs for her. Just in case. All six came back in the spring and would land on her hands and arms. We all live together now and she and I are now the neighborhood Chicken Mamas
