Is it possible to get a few meat bird hens and a rooster and have a self sustaining flock? I keep telling myself that it is, but then I hear stories about meat chickens getting so big they collapse under their own weight...goofy I'm sure.

Anyhow, are there any specific breeds to do this with?

Thanks!

Try Regular Standard cornish birds like Dark Cornish, or White Laced Red cornish, Ideal even has buff. They make awesome meat birds and they lead a normal life and lay well. They are a heavy breed which are heavily fleshed and muscled. I have two hens in my broiler breeding project with a cuckoo Maran roo. They wont grow AS FAST as the Cornish X hybrids but they are sustainable birds and they do not eat near as much.
