That was what I thought, 8 bucks shoot if they fell over dead I wasn't out all that much. It'll be fun to see what they do. If they fall apart, I'll bring 'em back this time next year and I'll be sittin' there with a pair of older Cochins waiting on somebody that just wants a yard ornament.

My thought exactly!

Jen,
I just saw your post on CL. Wish I had seen it sooner. Caesar's Creek Flesa Mkt is in my neighborhood so I would have been there. I'm a newbie looking for equipment, so hope you do another swap meet there soon.
Thanks

We will be doing this again in the spring so keep an eye on the BYC and also on craigslist.
thanks!!

There were barred Cochins there as well. The smooth feathered hens were paired up with frizzled roos, though, and I don't have the experience to recognize good type under all those crazy feathers. Anyone know whose those were? I like barred, but I would have no idea if they had a good pattern or not. I should have some mille fleur project chicks to trade for a nice barred Cochin next spring!

That's what I thought! I'm too insecure to show up at a show with something that I'm not sure is good, and I don't hae the experience to discern quality yet. I did see some barred Cochins on ebay recently, where the hens had LACING in their feathers! That's as far as I go in my ability to judge, though. I feel like a kindergartener all over again when faced with a variety of chickens: I can tell a Turken from a Showgirl, but you might be able to convince me that an OEGB is a Serama!

The best thing to do is talk to a LOT of exhibitors and make sure you check out the winning birds, That will give you a good idea of what they are supposed to look like. I did see someone with VERY nice barreds on here selling eggs with maran eggs. You might try looking them up and getting some of those eggs and hatching.

UGH! I am so flippen hatched out this year! I have over fifty eggs in the incubator, and babymakes5 just gave me more! Tate still owes me a dozen eggs, IF I can get him to ever reply to my emails, and I don't even want them! My new black Cochins are the only ones laying right now, and my white pullet has started to crouch, so maybe I'll be able to swap something soon.

Heads up for everyone -- I now have a lavender Silkie/something roo as a mate for my porcelain hen that doesn't lay eggs! Don't hold your breath, but there might be lavender Silkie chicks available next year!
