SWEDISH Duck Thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi all, I am new to Backyard Chickens.  I bought 7 Swedish ducklings earlier in the year and another pair last month.  I presently have some ducklings hatching (from eggs I put in the incubator).  The first two were hatched gold colour with yellow beaks and legs.  I am hoping they will darken up but it could be the recessive white gene I have seen people talking about?  Time will tell!  I love the breed so far.  I am a first time duck owner and they have been great.  They free range every day and swim on our dam.  They are locked away at night.  I bought ducks to control our snail population and they seem to be doing a good job.  I will post some pics once the hatching has finished.  I also have Barnevelders, Australorps and Plymouth Rock chooks.

Welcome! I hatched 4 back in March. Wherever was yellow turned white, black stayed black. I have 4 totally different variations. One is almost all black with some white speckled in his bib. One is mostly black but has a full white bib. One is mostly white with just a splash of black at his tail, and one is about half black/half white. They changed a little as they grew and molted, but not much. Enjoy your babies!

I had a clutch of eggs hatch what look like Swedish ducks, black with white bibs. they are 7 weeks old. I'm wondering how to tell the difference between hens & drakes. Is it the tail thing, or the color bills, or heads? Thanks!

Voice will probably be the first. Later the tail. I think the Drakes' heads are a bit greener, but since the Ducks' heads can be green/black too I don't know that that would be a good tell. I have a Black Swedish and her black colors are more green and iridescent than my Cayuga.

Drakes sound like someone shoved a kazoo down their throats. Swedish ducks can have a fairly raspy voice, but if they make other voices (especially a loud quack), they are girls. Since you have a whole clutch you should be able to tell the difference fairly soon.

I recently got two of these ducks and im starting to have problems with one of them. I think shes sick shes not walking and acting normal. I was going to treat her with Tylan 50 but I need to know where to inject her with it at? I didn't know if it was the same as a chicken or not. Any advise would be helpful!

Tylan is used to treat respiratory infections and necrotic enteritis, but not much else. Can you post some pictures of her poop?

Shots in ducks are given the same way as with chickens. If in the muscle, it's always the forward part of the breast muscle, never in the leg or thigh.

I wont be able to post some pictures. She stays out on my pond and considered wild but she only comes down to my coops every once and awhile.
