Swedish Ducks

This is a fun thread. Who would have thought of all of this stuff?
How about their webbing on the feet, I see mine are multi colored (for lack of a better word) Will they turn all one color or will they stay like this?

I think the babies are very adorable, and truth be told; while I'd love them to be perfect examples of their breeds

..........I know no matter hoe they turn out I will be just a pleased!

They are all beautiful to look at and great characters to have in your life. At the end of the day, the breed standard is just something people made up.

With the feet, Swedish are meant to have a mix of brown and orange. It doesn't really matter exactly how much brown and how much orange. A patchy brown and orange mix is good. I find that my black ones have dark brown and orange while my splash/silver have mostly a dull orange. Legs shouldn't be bright orange all over though, like a Pekin. If they start out 'multicoloured' (patches of orange and darker patches) they'll stay that way. I've found though that mine have developed a bit more orange on them as them get older. I like the patchy feet - I think it looks cute

I went as visited with the ducks today. Oh my how they have grown in less than a week!

These 2 ducks LOVE to swim under water......and they can swim a LONG time under there. But doing so water logs them then they float very low in the water!

I am so excited to see their bibs are still pretty big.

And Cocoa, you are so right about the coloring on the bills...Look at the one that had a lot of white....is it molted around the sides....(Kinda cute)

Sinking...

I got better pictures of the other one...look how dark she is. She has no yellow on her wings....does this mean she will have all dark wings with no white?
and, what is this spot n her head. She had it when we opened the box, we thought she got pecked by another duckling...but wouldn't that have gone away by now?

Awww.....beautiful!!! They are looking great.

If that one you are holding has absolutely no yellow on the wing tips she/he will have no white flight feathers. Her wings will be all blue. I have one like that too. It's a recessive gene so she s/he may still be a carrier for it, just not showing it. The black spot on the head is nothing at all to worry about - it's just a spot of black feathering. All blues have some black feathers here and there when they get their adult feathers. Your duckling may end up with a black spot on the head or it may go away when proper feathers come through.

They all look really happy

Ya, I think my friend spoils them.... They all look GREAT and get along so well.

I'm pretty pleased so far...... Now to get their house finished and get them home!

I'm so glad to find this thread! I've had a hard time finding much info on the Swedes. I got two blues from our feed store back around the end of April. They are a couple months old and huge! I love them both, but I'm worried they are both boys and my husband doesn't want to keep them if they are. One is for sure a boy, he has the curly tail. The other one doesn't seem to have a curly tail yet, but she (hopefully) isn't quacking yet either. The boy has a bigger bib and his bill is blueish colored, while the other one has a lot less white on the bib, and her bill is more greenish looking. I can't find any info on bill differences in the sexes. Anybody have thoughts?

There isn't any color difference in sexes, except in the adult plumage, the males should have a dark blue head.

Yellow feet and yellow bills are a disqualification for showing.

They both have the orange mottled feet, and their heads seem to be the same gray color. Maybe I do have two boys.

I'm not worried about showing them or breeding. They just were for eggs to have along with my chickens. Thanks for the info!

In black birds the drakes have a greener head than the females. Blue drakes also have a darker blue head as Oregon Blues has said. Splash/Silvers have no difference in feather colour at all. In all colours the bill is a bit more greenish in the males. Male bibs tend to be bigger (but not always). Apart from that there's not much difference in the sexes at all (apart from the curly tail and the quack!).
