Swedish Flower Hen Thread

I have a fluffy hand towel around him. I've been giving him water with Poly Vi Sol in it. I just went and checked on him. He's not going to make it.

I read that having the humidity too high from days 1-18 can cause full term embryo's to not hatch. I will do a dry incubation from here with the eggs that are due to hatch in 2 weeks.

This is my first hatch in this bator. I would've done a dry hatch with these eggs, but the FYI on the instructions for the bator recommended keeping the humidity around 45% day's 1-18 and increase it to 65% during lock down. Hopefully I'll get some out of these other eggs.

splash IS the blue gene. in it's homozygous form (2 copies of the gene).

and yes she's splash, otherwise she'd be black or blue based with that much red showing thru. there are mutations that turn all black to white, but found primarily in the game breeds (old english, etc) and she doesn't look anything like that variety.

Thanks for responding to the questions, the genetics thing is quite fascinating to me, just trying to understand it better, I get it in birds that are all black, splash and all white, I'm having a hard time, for some reason getting it in these SFH's, I guess the mottling is throwing me off...

soo sorry about your chick, kimbroe

so sorry to hear about your problems... i dry incubate EVERY bunch, but in the winter i use a small container with a couple holes in the lid to give a teeny bit more than ambient humidity, since the heat seems to make it much drier than the summer time (less than 10%). then at lockdown i put paper towels on the bottom, a small (4x6x2") container with a bent hardware cloth lid & paper egg crate with eggs sitting mostly upright (depending on the angle of the air cell) into the hatcher.

my hatch rates of eggs that make it to lockdown is usually over 80%. the overall hatch rate for fertilized eggs seems to vary by breed, some breeds tending to quit mid-way more than others I noticed.

the SFH eggs i got, only 1 was clear, and of the 4 that went into lockdown, i hatched 4, but lost one overnight (shrink wrapped & assisted). i'll have to wait for a friend's pullets to start laying before i'll probably try hatching any more SFH.

Oh... you have a friend with SFH pullets?

LOL!

Yes - this whole incubator thing seems to be more art than science, and with the loss-rate so many people have been experiencing with the SFH eggs, I think I may have to leave it to the pro.

I am not sure if your little one is still with you..if so...STOP the Poly Vi ! Just give water every few hrs. now. I have found that giving them a lot of that stuff, causes them to be really jerky, and non responsive. I only give a hint of it to my babies that are having problems, but only give it a few times, then go to water. They can take time to "wake" up. I so hope that baby is still alive, and you see this. If so, just leave the baby alone for a while if it is jerking and twitching, it can still make it. If it is doing this, just let it be until morning. Good luck!!
