Swedish Flower Hen Thread

ok this is the one i was thinking of... pretty sure she looks like a splash girl. kinda like weeble (who would probably make a nice addition to a sfh pen, if not for the dark feathered legs and potential for blue eggs LOL)

I would guess you are probably right on track with Elinor being a splash. Her speckling (markings) are very washed out in comparison to her flock-mates. Would that be caused by the splash? In coloration, she does look a lot like Weebs!

Is Weeble still a girl? (LOL)

Only 1 hatched. I did eggtopsies on the others. They weren't moving. 4 were full term, never internally pipped, the other 5 were underdeveloped, so they must have died before lockdown.

I got a thermometer (regular one) and it's reading the same temp as the digital one on the bator.

What's everyones opinion on laying them down to hatch and setting them upright in egg cartons to hatch? Which do you prefer?

I'm fixing to candle my 20 replacement eggs from my damaged shipment. Hope this goes well! I know at least 2 are growing the 2 that are cracked.

Ahhh.... ok, I see why you would call that one splash.... but even then it looks like a toss-up for it to have blue genes.... so do you just get lucky to get a blue SFH??

Well, bless your heart. I know how your feel. And I think there just be a few more on here that can relate, so when we do this...

it really does come from our hearts. Enjoy your little one, and please, we would love, to see a picture!!

Quote: splash IS the blue gene. in it's homozygous form (2 copies of the gene).

and yes she's splash, otherwise she'd be black or blue based with that much red showing thru. there are mutations that turn all black to white, but found primarily in the game breeds (old english, etc) and she doesn't look anything like that variety.

Gosh thats awful. So sorry! Hoping for better luck with your replacement eggs!

I always hatch mine laying down. I actually have never tried hatching in a carton, because I've always had pretty good hatches with them laying down. The only bad hatches for me have been when I have temperature issues. Power outages, bad thermostats, not reading the thermometers correctly etc. My last 7 eggs were very strange. I had a clutch of 13 in the incubator when my best colored hen, who had been broody, started laying again. I decided to add some of her eggs to the ones that I already had going. The original eggs were due to hatch on the 24th, I added 4 for the 28th, and then 3 more due on the 2nd. On the 24th, 11 of the 13 hatched (lost one), on the 28th nothing. On the 30th, 3 of the 4 (due on the 28th) hatched, and on the 2nd nothing. On the 4th I threw out the last three eggs. I know temp and humidity were good, because the original ones were right on time, and would only have been a week ahead of the last 3. All seven started developing. Three of the first 4 hatched, and seem healthy, but they don't seem to be growing well. ? ? Not sure what is up with them, they are only about a third the size of the original 10. The only difference is that the last 7 were all from a single pair. My colored hen with an extra rooster who I had not used previously. Now I'm wondering about something genetic. I will be watching these 3 little guys.

My little one is not doing so well this morning. Very weak. I gave him some vitamin water. He drank a little bit. I put him back. Last night he was moving lots and making lots of noise. Not sure what happened. I really want this one to make it. He's super dark with light yellow (almost white fuzz). Fuzz is still matted down. I'll clean him up if he makes it.

Kimbroe -
Try cleaning him up a bit now, especially around the nose and head. Sometimes egg-goo can get stuck around their noses and make it harder to breathe. Also, try a little pediasure, gatoraid or electrolyte water with baby vitamins in it.

These were the things that helped my little Frida survive. Is s/he alone or do you have something in with him/her? Like a stuffed animal or a feather duster? That can help too.

I'm pulling for your solo little one!
