Swedish Flower Hen Thread

The incubator I have is a still air incubator I was given to borrow....they have never had problem. With hatching before I had a dish of water to keep humidity up and the temp was right....I followed the directions that I got in the box so O am puzzled

Awwww... I'm so sorry to hear of your losses! Keeping my fingers crossed you will have some good, hearty survivors hatching soon!

Did the last two hatch?

I can start gathering some more today if you would like to try again. Maybe UPS would be more gentle with the package. Also I could use a smaller outer box and try to pack them more tightly.

UPS won't ship eggs. and i've found bubble wrap and packing peanuts seem to do the best for me. i also don't use an egg carton, as it jars all eggs equally, while if they're just loose in the packing peanuts they seem to ship better as the peanuts take the stress of motion away from the eggs better. i also double box, with packing peanuts around the inner box as well.

in addition, with some experimentation with larger (turkey) eggs over this last summer, it was found that laying horizontally rather than vertically had better hatch rates, even in the same shipping box.

Cool I'll lose the egg carton and I have lots of bubble wrap and peanuts around from Christmas. Makes sense to have eggs lay horizontally in the box- that's how they are positioned with the hen, and in the 'bator.

I had 2 out of 7 SFH hatch that were laid horizontally. The packing was wonderful. It was my first time hatching and I think I didn't do lots of things right. Still have those sweet SFH's, though, and I adore them. Would love a bunch more. My second try at hatching, I had only 2 of 10 hatch. These were laid vertically in the box. I had more one that got to the end, but was shrink wrapped, so it was most certainly my inexperience that killed that one. :( These were not SFH's though.

the best hatch I've had from shipped eggs were when one of my girls went broody. 4 out of 5 SFH hatched. They were from Bernie56. Not sure if SFH are just picky, but my hatches in the bator haven't been near that successful. The most successful bator hatch was 4 out of 12 (6 hatched, 2 died the first day). I've got 45 eggs in the bator right now. 24 SFH, 12 Cuckoo marans, 8 EE. They're all shipped. I hope they do well! The 8 EE were a week late getting to me, so they set out on the porch all day on Christmas Eve while we were out. It was only about 30 degrees that day. I stuck them in just to see if anything happens.

Hello all! My daughter and I saw pictures of these birds and we are now obsessed! We are in the Seattle area in Washington. Does anyone over here on the west coast have these beautiful Swedish Flowers? I hate to ship eggs so far and certainly not chicks! I would prefer to find something locally.
