My older ones are still with the other chickens of other breeds they were hatched with. The younger ones are separate because I have no more that age. When they are older and all the same size I will put the SFHs together. Fortunately, all the boys are already together. I plan to separate them into breeding pairs when the girls start laying.

Hatch isn't going so good.

Not the fault of the chickens, seems like it's the fault of the USPS. I'll know more tomorrow. . . I'm bummed. Going to bed.

I bought Lavender Orpington eggs from Wildhorse farms and he sent 15 and 11 hatched. I was very pleased with packaging and shipping. I tried to hatch SFH's twice before breaking down and ordering chicks again from Greenfire. I got my first pair from a rare bread special this spring from Greenfire and fell in love with the breed so decided to try hatching eggs. My first attempt only 3 out of 8 eggs developed and out of the 3 that hatched only one made it. My second attempt 4 out of 6 eggs developed perfectly until lock down. Only 2 hatched and only one made it. I opened the shell on the other two that didn't hatch and they looked perfectly formed. I am not sure what went wrong. This was the same hatch that I got 11 out of 15 Lavender Orpingtons. So I have about $100 into those two chicks. Lucky me they are both girls.

My SFH's are all mixed in with there other hatch mates right now. I have four different ages groups. I do plan on separating them when I start collecting eggs for hatching. I only have one SFH laying eggs right now. Her eggs are a lot different in color and size the compared to Marans, EE, and Welsummer that are laying right now. The eggs are so little and cute. Anyone know how long until they start getting larger?

Okay, here's the skinny: I won 6 eggs at auction from Duemig10. She sent me 10. Of the ten, 4 never started, 1 quit early 2 quit mid way and 3 hatched. Of the 3 that hatched, 1 had a crooked neck and died in less that 24 hrs from hatch. That leaves these

I too have some SFH from this Spring from Green Fire Farms. I have 7 - they are very healthy and diverse in their colors. One pullet has a crest and the 2 roosters are beautiful. Here is my question. One chicken in the bunch has white legs, completely pale and no color. Everyone else have yellow legs. Plus, this odd one is twice the size, and I swear she/he has rooster and hen traits. Could it be a he/she? She tried to crow, but it was pathetic. She is so large, people think she/he is a turkey. She lumbers along instead of running. When I get home (I am at work) I can post a picture. We call her Helga since it suits her. Has anyone else had this experience of complete oddness? The breed is not that old in the US, could this be a mutation already?
