Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Finally getting around to pics of my first hatch from the new roos. I very pleased with the variety of colors in this batch. I put in 17 of their first eggs. I had 3 clear, 3 early quitters, and 9 of the 11 good eggs hatched! I had 1 with a bum leg that didn't make it but the rest are doing well. Here are a few pics at 10 days. There were 4 in shades of brown, 2 light ones, 1 smoky brown/blue, and one black/white.

I'm particularly intrigued with this little one, she seems to be feathering in a buff color that I've not seen before. Its kind of difficult to see in the photos, but it is a beautiful light golden color. I know that you can never tell what color they will finish out this early in the game, but I'm really interested to see how she develops.

They're so pretty. I've never seen that buff color before either, keep us posted with pics!

I've been raising mille fleur bantam cochins for a while now, and while not common, most of my buffs end up being buff-based calico-type markings... here's my last buff chick that hatched out, as an adult.

i find that the sfh seem to mirror a lot of the mfc colorations, with the exception of those that are mostly one color (black/blues).

*bottom right. the other is my primary rooster for that breeding pen. unfortunately i lost her over the winter to a possum

most of my (mille fleur cochin) chicks are a darker brown/gold base color at hatch.

I met Bulldogma today and got a dozen eggs to hatch

It's so neat to meet someone from BYC! I'll let y'all know how the hatch goes. They'll go in the incubator tonight after I candle what's in there now (13 EE eggs).

I am fairly certain, after examining the chick again last night after it had gone to bed and thus was not as active, that it has dislocated its hip. Pretty bird, of course, but if it's a rooster, it would make my decision much easier. :( Doesn't seem too distressed, but it can't move fast, which makes me concerned for its safety here on the farm. Can't quite tell gender yet.

I wonder if one of my current GF chicks and yours, Bernie, are the same color. I also had some buff/yellow ones in my last GF lot (one is actually this injured chick) and they are white with a little red now. I'll see if I have a photo.

Here is my buff chick from February

And here is that chick now. Forgive the dirty brooder/hospital box. Cleaning day.

You can see a blonde chick up on top the EcoGlow, and it seems to be turning out the same way.

It's so much fun watching these guys change day to day.

ETA: opinions on whether or not this chick is a rooster would be greatly appreciated! I sort of think it's a rooster....but then that means I paid $19 each for roosters, as all of them look like this! Hatched a week maybe before Valentine's.

the big guy with the crest (looks splash to me) is definately a roo if it's around 2 months old... the little ones i'd say it's too early.

my 4 month old sfh girls don't have quite that much comb yet...

Is he a SFH? He looks a lot like a Mille Leghorn... shape/type, white earlobes? I'd love to see some updated pictures to see how he has changed colorwise though.
Jeremy,

OMG, you might actually be right. This bird has had me totally stumped. It did not cross my mind that it could be a MFL because they coloration is so completely different. I will take a better look at him today. If it ends up not being a swede, I think I will need to hide my head in a hole. LOL

Then I have all roos. What are the odds of that?! I'll see how this guy manages for a few days and may end up euthanizing him :(

I need to buy pullets.
