I don't think the sfh is a HORRIBLY broody breed, like maybe, my dorkings (6 currently) or cochins (5 currently), but even non-broody breeds have their moments. LOL i would say, if you WANT them to be broody, hatch eggs from the broody mommas especially. if you don't, hatch everyone else's. LOL
Monday he was fine and today he passed away on the ride to the veterinarian.
Yesterday he became a bit lethargic and disoriented. No respiratory symptoms - clear eyes/nose... but the top of his comb started turning a purple/black color... and today he died.
His body is at the vet for testing. It could possibly have been a black widow spider bite on his comb, but I won't have answers for a couple days.
I'm pretty torn up over this loss... and I don't have another SFH roo of breeding age.
Once I get the results back and am sure this was not something contagious, I will be looking for another SFH roo to spoil.

if it comes back as being non-contagious, i'd be willing to loan you my 'baby' roo... 'bubba' was hatched early-mid december, so should be figuring things out soon. not quite the quality of gunnar, but he is crested. as long as you promise to spoil him rotten.

What a wonderful offer. And yeah - he'd be spoiled rotten!! Then hopefully by the time your girls are starting to lay, I'll have found another boy for myself. I'm growing a few out (WildHorseAnnie chicks) and will be keeping a roo or two from that batch... but they're still in the brooder.
Yeah - not frostbite, for sure. That's why I'm thinking spider bite. I've seen A LOT of black widows lately. No more chicks or chickens will be introduced to the yard until I know what's up. I'm a little in shock over this...
Quote: oh and don't forget i've still got those 3 boys... the 1 i got from you last month plus 2 more a week younger. i only need 1 of them. (plus bubba)
the little boy i got from you is looking a lot like gunnar too.
and actually, i think the girls are laying already... the boys say they are at least. LOL

Leigh, I almost started crying right here in class.
I am so sorry to hear about your Gunnar, I know you love him as much as I love my Bazinga.
I'm sure you are getting some wonderful offers, so you'll have some tough decisions, and not to make it any more difficult, but I would like to offer Orion, Bazingas son. Yes, I was saving him for Gunnars daughters, but I have a 'young man' of mine that is growing up with those girls and has already proven himself to be just as protective as his dad and older brother.
Just say the word.
