Swedish Flower Hen Thread

I am in north TX, hot here means 100*+. I'll have to see if anyone around here has them. I may need to wait until they are more common and the price comes down.

I think I can legally have 12 chickens, but I really don't want that many and I can't have roo's so I wouldn't want to order a bunch of them.

Thank you for the info.

Depending on where you are, there might be someone here kind of close to you. I thought someone in TX has them.

Guys, where did the map go?

We made a map and list of breeders to help people who want to get some but maybe can't order a group or whatever.

I am just north of the DFW area. I'll check out CL. I need to get my coop/run built still and am planning on chicks in March.

I am excited!

I second CRaigslist. I usually sell my extra SFHs on there for $10 each. I am sending a batch to my sister in the Spring. If you are still looking and don't mind driving to get them from her in Austin, send me a Pm and I will send a couple along for you to pickup.

I just did a quick look on CL and there aren't any. November isn't the best time to look though!

My local feed store will have chicks in early March depending on the weather. I can only have hens where I live so I need sexed chicks. Feed store sells hens only. At least that is what they order. 90% of the time that is what they are.

I'll see what I can find in February/March.

Thank you :)

Excited to finally post on here! I have had this girl for a few months now:

And just recently got these three (2 roo's, 1 hen):

Can't wait to start collecting eggs and hatching next spring!

ok just a heads up... I'm headed for 2 shows in the next month. the VPBA will be at the caroline county fairgrounds north of Richmond VA, and the TVPC show (also ABA nationals) in Knoxville tn...

I've got a variety of chicks I can bring with me, if someone is interested, but they will be staying here otherwise.
a few SFH (possibly a few of leigh's extras), 1 black laced bantam blrw cockerel, a pair of mille fleur bantam cochin chicks (the pullet is split mille but will produce nicely marked chicks). I've also got an ee cross pullet that should mature large bantam or small LF... momma is LF EE, sire is red bantam cochin. yeah he got lucky. LOL as well as a silver grey dorking girl or 2... (mature, going on 2 years old).

pm me if you want more info...

Hi. I am in Livingston, Texas. That's about an hour's drive east of Huntsville. I have quite a few SF ranging in age from just starting to lay to birds about a month old. Most of my birds are direct GFF bought. My goal is to have a variety of colors but not too many of any one color. I will have some to sell in the near future because I will have extras of all my colors and also because I am concentrating on the non crested birds and many that I have are crested. We might could work something out where I could meet you in Huntsville if you wanted to get several. PM me if you want to talk.

To be honest, I don't know of anyone that sells sexed SFHs. I would question anyone that does since SFHs are more difficult to sex than other breeds. If you absolutely cannot risk having a rooster, then you might want to consider one of the breeds that are sexable at birth by color such as Cream Legbars, Bielefelders, Rhodebars, etc. Or buy a hybrid such as a red sex link (might be called Golden Coment or Red Star in Texas).

Unless the feed store guarantees that they will take the bird back if it turns out to be a rooster, find a breeder and get one of the above birds.

However, if you want to roll the dice, SFHs are lovely birds. Mine tend to pick on my Cream Legbars. But other than that, they are nice.

Quote: I'll sell sexed sfh, but they won't be babies...

the ones i'll be taking to Knoxville/Richmond will be between 7 and 12 weeks old or so (hatch September 16 and October 13) sexing is still best guess at this point but a couple are showing signs of being definite roos.
