Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Congrats on your new roo, PugBug!

Ki4got and others had asked for a list so they know whose eggs are whose (since I mark them all). So here ya go! I will add more when the youngsters become breeding age.

Beautiful chickens.....can't wait to get my eggs!

I have 3 so far for your order... should have a full dozen in a few more days (unless this winter storm slows the rate of lay).

Lovely birds! How does one tell the eggs apart? I have so many birds that I havn't a clue who lays what.

That's a good question.
With previous hens, I was able to tell which hens layed which eggs by slight variations in eggs shape, size, and color. I would collect the eggs several times throughout the day, and knew which hen laid which egg, because I'd see which one was in each nesting box.
I have 2 SFH that are laying right now, and their eggs appear identical, so I don't know which one is laying which, although I just looked at them again, and some seem slightly more pointed than others, but it's just barely noticeable.

I wonder if you could put a survelance or game camera pointed at your nesting boxes, and that would give you a clue, although if they all use the same box, maybe not.

The eggs vary ever so slightly in color and shape. I have been keeping track of which birds are laying which eggs via frequent visits to the chicken yard.

That said, I don't always get them right. I try to get out every hour or so and see who is in what box. There are a few that lay eggs that are pretty easily identifiable. But there are a couple that lay very similar eggs.

I will have another group come into lay around April, but I am hoping to have them separated into breeding pens (the plan is actually for large breeding "paddocks," by then which should help. We'll see how long I can keep this up for. LOL!!

Needless to say, eggs are harder to track if I'm away from home a lot - like when my youngest is in the hospital or whatnot. Those times I have to just rely on an educated guess based on color, size and shape. But normally I'm home every day.

One nice thing about Swedish Flowers is that their desire to inspect, explore and forage always seems to over-ride their perceived discomfort of the elements.

The snow leopard... in her natural habitat.

Exploration and foraging trumps all. Even when it's reaaaaallllllllyyyyyyy windy!

I THINK I might have a 'snow leopard' in the makings... hatched out what I'm calling splash, but has faint faint buff coming in on its wings. I almost didn't notice it, thinking it was just left over FF, which EVERYONE is wearing equally well. LOL
