thanks but I'm pinterest ignorant... LOL

Meanwhile, I have a new toy -- camera in phone like the rest of the world, & it takes (to me) amazingly great pictures so at long last here are updated ones of my 4 sfh birds!

#2 Roo - Stav - this is the uncrested (?)splash that we are guessing is a Mace son if I remember correctly
no, he's black based... otherwise he wouldn't have black tail feathers. he's just got heavily mottled wings and tail both, and not so much on his back and neck.

I have a question for anyone (k.i.forgot, bulldogma, etc) who could direct me and/or post
pictures of chicks at 1-3 days old and the corresponding picture of them as mature adults.

I know that sfhs are a landrace so things aren't exact but since I am getting more chicks this year, I want to see if I can get a couple where they look different than the three hens I already have, if that makes sense.

<~~~~in my profile pic, one can see I have a MF, a black (?name), and a white/grey splash (definitely not all white like BDG's nameless pullet or her mother)

it's easier said than done... I hatch so many, take pics, etc. but I don't usually get adult pics since they sell so quickly.

typically tho, a mille fleur type chick (blue or black) will have a golden head, ones like your blue or black girls will typically be what I call penguins (all blue or black as a chick, with white/yellow belly.

ok, the black (looks green) feathers did grow in recently so I had Splash in my mind from when the only tail feathers showing were the white w/ grey ones which are now under the longer big black(green) ones.

1.) OK so, given he is black, who does that make his Daddy??

2.) So now I have 2 Black based Roos, 1 crested 1 UNcrested - so besides the crest is there any functional difference for breeding between these 2 roos?

Thanks!

Ok I truly believe the fates do not want me to have SFH!

I ordered 2 dozen eggs from an eBay person, box arrived with eggs smashed, ones I cleaned and incubated started but died by 5 or so days. Set the dozen she sent me to replace, 2 hatched, one has feathered legs and both started crowing this weekend.

Ordered another dozen from a BYC'er and one hatched but had to be helped out of egg and is crippled (she laid in incubator for 2 days before moving and then I fed with a syringe for 4 days) her neck is very kinked and it looks like her head comes out of where a wing attaches, can feel the vertebrae is out of place, she is mobile and does normal chicken things but isn't and never has been as active as a normal chick.

Gave up on hatching and ordered 13 chicks from Fisher Farm. All arrived and are healthy and thriving. They are 4 weeks old and I am thinking 11 of 13 are roosters! Argh!

All I want are a dozen nice hens and a couple Roos, heck even 6 hens at this point

You have not had good luck with these beautiful birds. Don't give up! They are well worth it. Where are you located? Maybe you can find some eggs locally or a few hens.

Quote: no clue on the sire... black can come from black-black, black-blue or blue-blue breeding...
as to 2 black based roos, the rest is entirely dependent on wha tthey looked like as chicks. one was a 'penguin' which means he'll throw darker girls, and if I remember the other was a mille, which means he'll throw more milles probably.
