Thank you for the welcome! We had a great hatch with these guys, 14 of 18 eggs. This is Astrid.

I just built a plywood separator for the brooder. Did it length wise with cut outs in the bottom where they both get food water and heat lamp.

Well they aren't lacking a nice place to live ;) I think that as soon as the SF gets a bit stronger, he won't be tolerating the OE picking on him. Chicks know when another isn't as strong and they will harass them and sometimes cause death of the weaker ones. You know... survival of the fittest kind of thing! lol So just keep an eye on them until the SF can better take care of himself.

Thanks, Leahs Mom, he is shaping up to be beautiful and I LOVE Melabella's snow boy! So handsome! Also, Bukrub66, sorry to second Leahs Mom and say that I once had a group of Marans and one OE. That OE harassed those poor 11 Marans from day one - and they were hatch mates! Hopefully you'll have better luck!

Handsome boys, Leahs Mom!
My last imported German SFH egg didn´t hatch, either. The chick hadn´t absorbed the yolk sack yet, but otherwise it was fully developed. Bummer.
I´d still like to get a second gene source for my birds, and no one around here has them yet. We´re starting to plan our vacation for the Spring, and Sweden is one option. If we went, I´d probably try to take some hatching eggs back home with me (that´s obsessed for you!, now my birds are even influencing my vacation plans!). I´ve read on BYC about some people taking eggs with them on the airplane, and it worked out. Since I´m travelling within the EU, I think it might work. Anyone out there (Bulldogma maybe?) know of a good SFH breeder at the source?
Otherwise, after my disappointment I´m trying to resist the temptation to hatch some of my own eggs. My girls are still going strong with their laying. It´s starting to get really cold outside, though, and I don´t have heating in the coop. I´d have to keep the chicks inside for a very long time. I really could use I few more females, though. Maybe just a couple... Somebody please talk me out of it...

Hi! I just signed up but I've been following this thread for a while. My first group of SFHs hatched the week of July 4 from Leigh's eggs and they are flowering up beautifully! Love this breed.

Hi!! Great to see you here.

Hello everyone, I'm Ron from Texas and I just hatched my first SFH. Actually my first chicken ever. It hatched last night at 10pm and it is cute as can be. Out of 14 eggs, it was the only one that hatched so I scrambled to find it a buddy. The only day old chicks I could find was an Olive Egger, but we took the drive and the nice lady just gave it to us. Just wanted to introduce myself as I'm sure I'll be lurking around.
Welcome!

And I think this guy is a blue-based snow leopard, isn't he? He doesn't have a name yet.

Could be! Be sure to post lots of pictures of him as he grows so we can tell... and because we like LOTS of pictures!

Ha! Who doesn't like lots of pictures - especially of gorgeous chickens!?! Thanks for the family history on Astrid; it's so interesting to see how genes mix and pass down, isn't it? And she is SO sweet, too, and loves being held. Thanks for these wonderful chickens, Leigh!
