ROFL... you haven't watched the tanks go off down the yard 'en masse' after something somebody thought they saw... these guys are awesome foragers too. then again back when the breed originally became noted, they didn't have feed mills to head off to for chick feed and layer pellets. LOL the dorking can trace it's roots back nearly 2000 (or more!) years, to the Roman Empire (who later introduced them into britain). so they had to get good at finding food, or they didn't last long I think.

That's really cool history on the Dorkings!! Love this! SFH are a younger breed, certainly. They were bred down from those birds the Vikings brought from other places... like Rome.

I love the visual of your heard of tanks racing down the yard! LOL!!! Now quit making me want yet another breed! Let me get a bigger coop first, for heaven's sake!

Quote: don't worry, i'll have more dorkings. always. Lost Tannish, but i did hatch one pullet from her that's growing well, but lacks the 5th toe on one foot - a fault of 'big red' that may get him culled... - to be determined once breeding pens are done and in use... I've also got another order from Sandhill sent in, for more reds and coloreds, as i discovered i was hasty in culling too soon on several of the birds last spring/summer.

Hello everyone I was wondering if this might be a SFH or just a mix breed? One of my frriends was given this bird 3 years ago as a chick and she has no idea on the breed so im trying to help out??? I think it is just a mix breed but I really dont know any guesses?

yes, i'd agree probably a mixed breed. sfh have yellow legs for a start. also they are supposed to be speckled/mottled.

No - sorry, that's a very pretty mix breed boy. The first SFHs landed on American soil on June 17, 2010... just over 2 years ago. The first chicks were not hatched from those imports until November of that year.

SFH roos are generally not quite that wide, and they have longer, yellow legs.

Hope this helps :)

Pretty boy! Very handsome.

I have had several mixed breeds that are just gorgoeous. Usually make for interesting comments from everyone, but I prefer purebred. We started with a little of this and that and I bought

a flock of hatchery stock of egg layers that were crosses like cinnamon queens but they were something else and I was not very happy(they got egg bound often and stayed sickly)

all except one who is still with us.
