Swedish Flower Hen Thread

I hope I have one in the brooder that feathers out like that! (Otherwise, I'm going to have to put MORE eggs in the bator!

) I never cease to be amazed at the beautiful colors and patterns on the SFH. It is always a surprise. The crested roos can be very sneaky, but it doesn't look like the crest is spiky, so I would guess pullet.
Ooooh, I hope so too! I just took these two photos.

So many pretty birds!

My guy is being respectful... So far. I have my eye on him. I will cull him if he does it again and start over. The other one has been very good, so he might be the rooster we keep.

I'm worried they are getting frostbite, even with a well ventilated coop. I noticed this AM their combs were a bit grey looking on the tips. It's been super cold and windy. We got snow today. I couldn't catch them to be sure though....they seem to avoid me now!

I have noticed that my SFH combs do get a little blue or gray in the winter, but they recover when they warm up. They haven't actually gotten frostbitten yet. BTW, I just PM'd you!

Ok, terrific to know about the combs. It is supposed to warm up next week (hooray) and hopefully this darkness to the tips of their combs goes away I just PMed you back ;)

I put this out for some other folks but I'm thinking those of you w/experience w/SFH may have an opinion...

I'm posting to get the opinions of those of you that are good at figuring out sexes. They may be too young at 4 weeks (?)

These are my 4 Swedish Flower Hen chicks that are with the RIR broody. They are 4 weeks old this weekend. Any guesses as to sex? I apologize that some of the photos aren't the best. Trying to get these photos was like trying to herd cats. Little Black is especially hard to photograph.

The next 2 photos are Little Yellow. It is the largest chick of the bunch - the one that we hatched here.

The Next 2 photos are Little Gray.

Here is Little Orange with Little Gray in the background.

This is Little Orange alone.

They are still a little young, so this is just a guess based on a theory I am working on. Little Yellow and Little Orange are roos and Little Gray and Little Black are pullets. Give it another week or two and it should be more obvious.
