Swedish Flower Hen Thread

I noticed some wattles coming in on my 6 week SFH. Does this look like a boy? the comb isnt all that red or big but my other SFH the same age is slightly paler.

I would say that's a boy.

My girl is getting bigger! I posted pictures a while back. I think she just may start laying by the end of Feb..but March for sure.

These are her buddies. She hangs with three other pullets. I like the speckles on her head.

I have been thinking about this for some time now:

I'm afraid most, if not all, of my Swedes have something called "split wing." Very long primary feathers and there seems a distinct gap between primaries and secondaries when the wing fans out. I am trying to inspect all of them for it, although some are easier to catch than others- they come around me and are friendly but they definitely don't like me picking them up and messing with their wings.

Some don't have a gap but still have a shorter feather beginning the secondary set- not a completely even "fan."

Am I nuts and seeing things that aren't there or have others seen this too? I hear split wing is a recessive trait and rather a bear to breed out. Still, I'd like to try.

Any feedback would be appreciated, as to this or other possible problem traits you've seen that you want to breed out.

Here are the SFH chicks that I hatched for the NYD hatch-a-long.

The chicks from kimberly35042's eggs - 8/8 shipped eggs hatched!

I want a blue! Had one, turned out to be a cockeral..can't have the roos. :( These babies are going to be beautiful!

Sooo excited to be able to get some SFH in the march or so!!! I will be getting sexed pullets since I live in town and my city allows hens not roosters. I have been giddy with joy since getting husband permission and finding some one to hatch some babies for me!!!!

Actually, my girl that I just posted looked like this at 6 weeks. I was so sure it was a boy, and my blue was the girl. I had it backwards. The wattles on the boy/blue.. got big fast from 6 weeks on..so keep this one for a while, watch for just a while longer. :)

Thanks for the advice Cynthia, I will watch and wait for a few more weeks. I would be thrilled if I ended up with a SFH as pretty as yours! I love the Mille Fleur speckles along with the black around her neck and tail!

Hi, It's really a personal choice since these birds don't have a SOP. Since I had a lot to choose from I decided to start my flock without side sprigs and split wings...better now than later was my thought. It's dominant recessive and supposed to be hard to breed out. I waited to cull when my birds were at point of lay. I had a couple that appeared to be split wing that eventually grew their feathers. Here's a picture of birds I gave to a friend. These pullets have split wing and were close to laying. REALLY hard to give away beautiful birds!!
