Swedish Flower Hen Thread

I borrowed the eggs my broodies are cooking up. They smashed another SFH egg (why those and not the Silkie eggs, I don't understand :( And I had to move one hen out to stop the fights) but the one survivor egg looks great! Due to hatch end of the week. I can't wait to see if it hatches!!

Now have a grand total of four broody hens. One of the bantam Cochins decided she wants to try it and is pretty aggressive about it. She is happily sitting on a nest full of plastic eggs until SFH eggs arrive later today. I have the one Silkie hen sitting on plastic, and the other one has Silkie eggs, but when I candled them today, they look like duds. Not sure about that rooster.

Good luck with your hatch, Sunnyskies. I'd love a broody!

My hens are opera singers when they lay. Has anyone else noticed this? Each time an egg is layed, the chorus lasts for several minutes and every hen gets involved.. one of them is always just slightly behind the others... they're really funny!

The kids were being shy, so the photos aren't the best, but here are updated pics of the SFH I hatched on NYD from kimberly35042.

Loving those blacks w/ the YELLOW legs!

After we conversed a bit, I now know that I probably don't have ANY from your eggs since yours would probably have hatched earlier than I got my chicks. I'm definitely looking forward to possibly getting some of your blacks and blues in the future!

ok, i've got a question for you... a bit of a medical situation.

my (favorite) crested cockerel showed up this afternoon with a tear in the skin next to his crop. most of the feathers are gone and you can see part of an air sac and the side of his crop thru the opening... it's not bleeding at all, and he's running around just fine, except for that hole in the skin.

what should i do?

i'm afraid since it's not bleeding, it may not want to heal properly. if i had some ether (aka starting fluid) i'd be tempted to knock him out, cut the skin and stitch the raw edges back together, but barring that, any other suggestions? (something i've done before with pet rabbits and hamsters when they've fought too hard).

i did put him in a cage for the moment, until i decide what to do.

I would clean it real well and super glue it together. Perhaps put an antibiotic ointment inside before you glue it up.
